There are some pretty serious side effects, besides the annoying ones I experienced.
When I used the patch, I had lots of break through bleeding and this is a common complaint of those using the patch. My skin would also become irritated and red at the location the patch was applied. My boobs would also become extremely tender while using the patch. I recommend the mini pill for the first few months after pregnancy followed by the Nuva Ring. (Way fewer side effects!)
This is from the Ortho Evera (the Patch) Web site:
Serious as well as minor side effects have been reported with the use of the Patch. Serious risks, which can be life threatening, include blood clots, stroke and heart attacks and are increased if you smoke cigarettes. Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially if you are over 35. Women who use the Patch are strongly advised not to smoke. Some women should not use the Patch, including women who have blood clots, certain cancers, a history of heart attack or stroke, as well as those who are or may be pregnant.
Hormones from patches applied to the skin get into the blood stream and are removed from the body differently than hormones from birth control pills taken by mouth. You will be exposed to about 60% more estrogen if you use ORTHO EVRA than if you use a typical birth control pill containing 35 micrograms (mcg) of estrogen. In general, increased estrogen exposure may increase the risk of side effects. The risk of venous thromboembolic disease (blood clots in the legs and/or the lungs) may be increased with ORTHO EVRA compared with that of a birth control pill containing norgestimate and 35 mcg of estrogen. One study found a doubling of this risk and another study found no increased risk.

I love it and have been on it for 5 years. Everyone responds to birth control differently. Some can take Yaz, some can't, some can use the patch, some can't, you see where I'm going here? It's because of the ways different people react to medication that there are 20 different kinds (even your regular anti-inflamitories).
You'll just have to try it and see.
As for getting pregnant on the patch, you can say the same thing for the pill. You may also want to look into an IUD.

I was on the patch for 3 years a LOVED it!! I only switched to the pill because of the higher risk for blood clots for overweight women (I am slightly overweight) or I would still be on it. As for the gunk--yes it did get a little gunky towards the end of the week but I had a hard time taking the pill in college and needed something I could do less frequently. Yes, it did hurt a little when you took it off but I was usually a little sweaty (I live in the southeastern US--very muggy) so it came right off. Good luck!!

The patch never worked for me. It would fall off and the replacement would cost me as much as a whole months worth. I use the NuvaRing. It's changed once a week and if it should fall out (which mine never has), all you have to do is rinse it off with water and pop it back in. It's not quite as drastic as an IUD and not as much responsibility as taking the pill everyday.

I have 2 friends who got pregnant on the patch. I would opt for birth control pills.

It is making alot of women very sick right now. I would do LOTS of research. Other than that, I was on it for a few months and hated it. It was like wearing a dirty nasty bandaid for a week.
