You should research different breeds and pick the best one that suits your lifestyle according to adult size, coat type and how much time and money you are willing to spend on grooming, general temperament, amount of exercise needed, common health problems and if you're financially able to take care of them in case they happen, and original purpose as years of breeding has cemented certain instincts you should be aware of.
It is important to make sure you understand what the breed was originally bred and used for. This is an important step that many people seem to overlook. For example, Jack Russel Terriers are small and cute, but Terriers are characteristically smart and hyper. Not to mention they were bred to kill small rodents so it shouldn't be a big shocker if a JRT goes after a pet rabbit and kills it.
For Rottweilers, they are large dogs so they may have arthritis, hip dysplasia, or other joint problems that may need to be taken care of and often times results in expensive surgeries. Sometimes one surgery is not enough to correct the problem and multiple surgeries are required.
For Chihuahuas, a lot of them have diabetic problems and may require insulin shots every day. And of course since they're so small if you accidentally trip or step on them it will most likely result in a broken bone.
I suggest picking a few different breeds you are interested in and read all you can about them. The .... For Dummies books are very helpful and I suggest checking those out.

Rotwiler's are known to have joint problems especially in their hips. If you are planning on getting one make sure that it comes from really good parents and their is no history of this problem in their past. I had a friend who just had to put a 2 year old rotwiler to sleep because the pain in it's hips were so bad. If the dog is going to be inside most of the time a chihuahua would be best because of the size. If there are young kids in the house a rotwiler would be better because larger dogs get along better with kids because they aren't as scared of them.

I have a rotti... I love her I wouldn't think twice about owning a rot. However, since she is a large breed dog it did help to have her trained so that she's not a menace.. We also have 2 children and we got the dog beforehand. I love her, she's great with the kids and loves people.. However, I'm not very fond of little rat dogs... I have no use for them... Yippy little dogs... I've been bitten by a Chihuahua, so I'm biased towards getting a rotti.. Good luck with whatever you choose

I agree with sophylakes. Do some research. Is it going to be an inside or outside dog? I wouldn't get a chihauhau anyways. Do you live in a town/city or out in the country? Are you and your parent(s) prepared for visits to the vet, training the dog, etc. Again, do some research and think about if you want to take care of a dog for the next 9-15 years. Maybe a fish would be a better idea?

Well go with Chihuahua - you can spell that one! Just kidding, but seriously - those are two VERY different breeds. You're talking about a very small toy breed vs. a rather large working breed. You have a lot to think about - do your parents rent or own? A lot of places have breed regulations and will not allow so-called "bully" breeds. Chihuahuas are small and can be some-what hard-headed when it comes to house breaking. Are you ready to deal with that? Rottweilers need a lot of space and a LOT of exercise. I think you should research both breeds and maybe try to make the decision WITH your parents.

Rotties and Chihuahuas are great breeds, but not for everyone. Make sure you do extensive, extensive research before getting either one of them (or any breed) to ensure that they will be best suited or your family's needs. Only get them from rescue or reputable breeder who is a member of the Rottweiler Club or Chihuahua Club. It also wouldn't hurt to visit a dog show to talk to breeders and see if any of these breeds are right for you.

How about you go to the pound, visit with lots of different types of dogs and pick the one that "speaks" to you in your heart. You will be saving the life of a dog and you can't find a better creature than one that has been abandoned by its owner. Who knows, you may go and end up with a dog that you never even thought about having but you picked each other - and what better companion to have!

wow chihuahua or rot, those are two dogs on the complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
I had a rot when i was younger and i currently have 2 chihuahuas.
i guess it depends what kind of environment you can provide for your dog. If you have a large yard where the dog can run around, then a rot is good. A rot could potentially have a more aggressive personality as well.
chihuahuas are good for smaller or indoor dogs. they tend to bark at everything but they are very loving dogs.

I love both breeds but my favorite is a chihuahua. If you want a lap dog get the chi, or if you want a dog that will be more of a working dog, more active, etc, get the rottie. Bith are great dogs if raised right..
