Wouldn't they have been alcoholics or died from liver failure or something? I see a mention of wine all throughout the bible at meals, and I was just curious....was this a society of mellow heads and bumbling drunks?

Nope
Water wasn't safe to drink in a lot of places. Most European cultures still drink wine with just about every meal. Its the Puritans who stopped that over here.

Shows how much you know. It has been shown that drinking a glass of wine with every meal is actually very good for you. So long as you leave it at a glass a night, it will have no impact on your liver whatsoever and will not cause you to be an alcoholic. That is true today. No reason to think it wasn't true 2000 years ago.

In those days, there was no way to purify water. Often, the water in the wells, or in the streams, was polluted.
Alcohol, including the wine's alcohol, will/ does/ shall kill MOST of the germs. They drank only enough wine to fulfill the need, at that moment, until they could arrive at a well, or spring, which provided safe water, and then they filled their water " vessels" and went on their way.

OK, Lets just assume that most of these people that have answered don't know what they are talking about. Back many years ago, all fruit drinks were called wine. If it was fermented and held alcohol content, it was called "good" wine. So when they spoke of drinking wine with their meal, they were talking about drinks such as grape juice.

Water was a pretty foul unclean thing to drink back then. The water was everything from transportation to communal toilet. Most people drank wine because it was safer than the water. Given the conditions of the time, you would prefer wine to water too.

Are the Puritans stopping you from drinking wine? Last I checked alcohol was legal....sounds like a personal choice.

Back in biblical times it was safer to drink wine than it was to drink water (no filtration). But yes, many died from alcohol related illnesses. Many still do.

No, because they only had a couple glasses of wine with every meal. They didn't get drunk all the time.

a glass of wine doesnt make u drunk... u must be quite a lightweight...

anyway the bible says drinking some wine is good for you. (especially if you figure that its cleaner than the water back then... they didnt have water purification plants or anything back then.)
