Keep him in the crate all the time. And if you cant bare to do that (like myself) always keep him in the same room with you and take him out every hour or so, and also 30 minutes after he eats, drinks, or plays. When he goes potty be sure to give praise and give him a treat. The best advice I can give you on this topic is to not let him sleep with you, otherwise he WILL go to the bathroom on the bed. Put the crate next to your bed with a cover over it, and everytime he barks, take him outside- even if it is at 3 AM haha. He will probably bark when you put him in for the first 5 or 10 minutes, but he will eventually stop, and if he doesnt then you will get so used to it and fall asleep. If he ends up having an accident, bring him to the spot tell him "NO" and then put him in a spot other than his crate. If you place him in his crate as a punishment, he will think that everytime you put him in there he is in trouble and he wont want to be in it. Hope I could help you out a little, I used these techniques and I was able to train my Shih Tzu in a couple of months. Happy Training!

take him out after eating and drinking and bring him to the same spot regularly. Praise the dog when he goes in that spot. When he is going give him a command to associate with going potty. I use "hurry". Then I use go home and walk quickly to go back to the house. By doing this you will teach the dog to go "hurry" then "go home" go back to the house. dogs like repetition and this will get him into a patern. If he should have an accident you should wipe up the area and wipe it on the ground in the area you want the dog to go. Bring him near it and give the hurry comand. prais praise when he does well. if you catch him in the act firmly say NO! and swoop him up and bring him to that same spot.

I have house broken many dogs. My method will teach the dog 2 important things. go potty and go home. If the dog should accidently get out he should eventually go potty and come home. Do not do paper training unless you plan to leave the dog for periods of time and this will be part of the normal routine. do not rub his nose in it, the dog has no clue what this is all about.

Do this process for about 3-6 days and be consistant. Exit the house through the same door to go potty for the first 4-5 weeks. Go home through 2 doors... maybe a front and back door.

Good luck

Take him out often....when you see him squat immediately tell him "no" and take him outside. He'll make the connection. Crate training is good, however he may not learn to not go potty in the house. He'll only learn to not go in his "bed". Never spank a dog when potty training.
