No, it would not matter if the amount were smaller, and it should be smaller because you are close to the friend and not her sister.

It wouldn't matter if the amt was smaller, but I wouldn't go lower than 20-25 bucks. Lower than that may seem rude, you'd be better off just giving her an empty card. Seriously, have you ever gotten a 10 dollar gift card to a store??? Its not even worth it! If you're gonna go less than 20 get it for a coffee shop. Thats the only place that would make it worthwhile.
I prefer to get certificates for places that people can actually use. I'm a big fan of Target. If she's going away to college she can put it towards dorm room stuff. If she's staying home or not going to school she can get some clothes or cd's or whatever.

A gift in any amount should be welcomed by the recipient. A gift certificate in any amount you can afford to a store that the graduate can easily access would be appropriate. You know, if you are not all that close to this person you are not obligated to purchase anything. In fact, a thoughtfully chosen greeting card would be just as appropriate. Gifts are wonderful to receive and fulfilling to give but not always necessary.

Since it's graduation and likely to be a small amount perhaps a place like Staples so she can get some school supplies for college perhaps, $15-20 isn't going to go far in a clothing store, maybe a restaurant or perhaps if a local mall has the type of certificate that can be used in all or most of their stores.

I'd go with about $20 for any gift or gift certificate. That's my standard no matter who invited me to the graduation party.

a $20 mall gift certificate would be good, so she can spend it anywhere in the mall. I would give her less because like you said, you're not close. she should be happy you thought about her.

when i graduated i only got presents from my family and that was it. don't stress it. they shouldn't expect anything from you at all. a gift cert of 20$ should be fine, from any regular store.
