I have nothing against a person wanting to better themselves. I live in Guatemala. I am a legal resident of Guatemala. I applied for and after many trips to immigration I finally received all the necessary documents to have legal status. I am also a US citizen by birth. I think that most intelligent people need to be more compassionate for people who have a dire need to go to the USA but legally. The rift is that illegals should not have the same rights and privileges as people who are legal immigrants in the United States. Most Americans have had ancestors who came from almost every country in the world. Were they illegal is the question I have? What is the difference now?

Why are many of you attacking her? She obviously has experienced hatred and don't just assume that she's illegal. Most people are blind to all the racism and hatred that many minorities face. It doesn't matter to a lot of people whether you're an illegal immigrant or legal immigrant. The guy a few places above me pointed out that he legally went to Canada but it was a long process....ok, you're speaking from being an American. We as Americans have not even half the struggle that other countries do to try and start a new life in a new country. I see so many people that take for granted the fact that they were born American and have so many opportunities they can pursue but instead they lazily live off mommy and daddy and hope that everything will be ok.

I understand that some immigrants come here and do illegal things and take advantage of the system, but thats a whole other issue because we have our own citizens doing the same. That's besides the issue. She asked why people hate immigrants...not illegal or legal. By making comments like "there's a difference between illegal and legal...look in a dictionary.....if you dont know the difference you dont deserve an opinion..."etc. You sound ignorant by assuming that she's stupid because she's from another country and basically make her whole point valid. You just talk without thinking and dont even think about the fact that she might actually be doing something positive with her self and just wants to know why she or her people receive hatred. If you dont like illegal immigrants that cause crime and take advantage of the system then say that...just that. Dont assume that every immigrant (illegal or legal) is doing these things. I know a lot of people may think that thats what they were implying but you seem to think that just because YOU dont have a problem with LEGAL immigrants that everyone else doesnt. There is plenty of racism in this country and as soon as we are able to support those people who are doing positive things with their lives no matter what their color or citizenship then we can build an even better country. Why do convicted criminals who are U.S citizens have any more right to be here than any other person in the world? what, because they were born here? BS!

Americans don't hate immigrants. Not even the illegal ones. We want our laws enforced. Breaking the law for a "better life" is no excuse.

Harm society? Please.....the corruption following this mass illegal migration is harming our society. People refusing to speak English and running people out of their homes and towns is ruining our society. Draining our social services, closing our hospitals and clinics and overcrowding our schools, is ruining our society.

America is a country trying to survive as well. We are not the unlimited job fair and freebie capitol of the world.

All I can say is if they all felt this peace and love that you describe.....then why all the kill the gringo, flying a foreign flag, demanding instead of asking, refusing to learn English etc.? Not the example at all of people who are supposidly greatful for a better life. It has caused more division than I've ever seen. Where most have settled they have turned into crime infested neighborhoods where regular Americans dare not tread. Let alone be able to find their way around since none of the signs are in English. Has anyone ever thought that many have brought this on themselves with their own arrogant attitudes? Too many have shot their mouths off degrading American people. Too many have played the race card and made unreasonable demands and made a mockery of this country to feel very compassionate. Whoever designed you're comming out of the shadows party didn't do enough research. Tough luck we're here and you're gonna deal with it and cater to me or I'll make your life hell isn't a very good avenue to take with law abiding citizens. This is our country and we have laws. We have worked very hard to accommodate a wide variety of people. There probably isn't a more compassionate group of people in the world that are willing to help anybody.........they pulled the wrong cards to play. Above all.....obey our laws and speak our language. Not tough or unreasonable demands for anyone when there's so much more offered in exchange.

This is in response to illegal imigration, not legal immigration.

Why do you have to ruin our future in search of yours. Crush our dreams in search of yours. You want to make a difference, do it in YOUR country. You say your leaving it all behind, WHAT? are you leaving? You will do to this country, just as you did to your own. Once, it has given all it can. You will move on to the next. You take jobs that could be done by citizens. Once you are amnestied into the country, you will become a drain on us. You will want the better jobs. You will ravage the already hideous Health Care system. Welfare will be our biggest employer, since, now that your citizens, you don't want that other job.

Plus, the first thing you did upon entering the country was BREAK THE LAW!!! Our ancestors got on boats sailed across an ocean, were made to sit on an island til they could pass the entrance exam or sent home. They saw fit to learn the language. Your contempt for OUR society. OUR society! Not yours! Tends to rub us the wrong way. Their are brave men in Iraq, risking their LIVES next to OUR sons, for the chance to EARN citizenship. What do you bring to the table? NOTHING!!

Go home. Make your country beautiful and perfect if you have soo much to offer.

Once more you get a whole list of people who claim to understand the fundamental problem with LEGAL immigration.

Let me sum it up for those who don't already know...

You live in mexico for instance....you have a decent job, and a photo ID, you have a birth certificate, and your relatively educated..so you live in the modern parts of Mexico. YOU won't have a problem coming to the United States. Most people don't understand..."why do they sneak in, instead of just coming here legally ??" The reason is simple, the problem is not. They risk their lives in the desert and their freedom by jumping the fence illegally because LEGAL means are not accessible to the impoverished and uneducated masses that are coming here. DO ANY OF YOU ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO COME TO THE US LEGALLY >??????.....If it were a matter of just filling out a form, don't you think people would just do that ?

Several forms needed...in fact. Several fees, which can amount to thousands of dollars(which these immigrants do not have). Long waiting periods ..YEARS. Lots of documentation required...some immigrants from poor countries don't even have birth certificates, many have no phone, let alone internet to get the information on the link I posted below..

This is the "FRONT DOOR" of America, which explains why so many people are using the back door instead. The front door is mostly locked to the poor and uneducated.

The statue of liberty is false advertising.

Why do you confuse the issue by using terms like "immigrants" when you know good and well that it is NOT the IMMIGRANT who is being opposed?? You know very well that it is "Illegal aliens" who are NOT wanted by the majority of Americans. And it would be fair of you to at least look into the very valid reasons we have for not wanting "illegals". Crime, disease, taxpayer money spent on people that are NOT entitled to our money that WE put into the system legally. Just as it is a myth that all Mexicans are criminals, (because I certainly know that isn't true) it is another myth that all people born in America get to live the "American Dream" . There are some of us who have to live week to week and hand to mouth, and never have ANYTHING left over for indulgences. We have to struggle just to keep our heads above water alot of the time. Please, do NOT insult ours or your own intelligence to actually believe that it is the Mexican person who is being critisized, but rather, the "illegal" one who comes like a thief in the night, only to bring chaos and destruction upon those he encounters. And please do not believe the hype that ALL Americans "have it all".

I don't think most people have any issues with immigrants - especially productive ones.

Illegal immigrants are just that... illegal. They have tried to bypass our laws for their own gain. No one likes a cheater. And that's exactly what illegal immigrants are - they are cheaters. They are criminals.

If someone wants to enter our country, they should show our country some respect and enter legally and then make themselves a productive part of the system.

Instead, you have thousands of illegal immigrants who come here illegally, then cannot get work (because they are illegal) and then live off the taxes of legitimate citizens. They become freeloaders. No one likes freeloaders.

I think every illegal immigrant that is here for non-political reasons (ie. persecution in other countries) should be sent back to their countries and forced to apply for citizenship like the rest of the law abiding immigrants.

I'm sure this isn't politically correct, but it's long past the time to worrry about that. Our lax policies on immigration and "slap on the wrist" prosecution of those violating the law and hiring those who violate the law are taxing our welfare, healthcare and other resources.

I think most people and most Americans want to help those around us - but we do have laws in this country. And we expect YOU to obey them too!

I understand the criminal. I can put my feet in his shoes. I would hope that if turned criminal, people would stop me.

You want your dream, but your dream is to steal our dream, to skip our laws, and according to some of the more vocal members of your group (the rest remain silent) want to take part of our country away and give it to Mexico.

You expect courtesy for such treatment? What about our dreams? What about a country for immigrants, protecting it's citizens from those who would escape here to avoid felony prosecution in their own countries, who are shipped here because they have serious contagious diseases, who want to take advantage of our welfare system, endanger their natives by living eight in a room in conditions that would choke a horse, avoiding taxes, taking jobs.

Some employers whine that they need the workers. They LIE. They don't want to raise wages. They want cheap labor. People talk about minimum wage being low. These employers, if they didn't have access to the cheap workers would raise wages to get workers! Why would any legal worker in the United States want it otherwise?

We don't owe you. We are not here for the same purpose.

You are ignorant of our laws, ignorant of what is just, scared because you have broken our laws and may get justly caught, greedy for money you don't have to pay taxes on, full of pride that says "you Americans owe me", and have closed eyes to the unjust way you are treating a country you claim to dream of.

You are the nightmare. We've lived with you long enough.

Folks, make it impossible for any illegal immigrant caught to EVER become a citizen and it will stop over night.

Listen ilovesoccer, Nobody hates immigrants. What most Americans don't appreciate is the free ride that WE pay for, just so you can be here. I'm not pointing this at you, but ALOT of people from there, come here and end up in the welfare system. Let me ask YOU something. Would you pay out of your pocket to support people you don't know? Most Americans work everyday, and pay taxes, and just get by. Most Americans are not rich. Now I can appreciate that you come from a place much worse than here, I can also appreciate that you have dreams. Well, then get to them, get to work to achieve them. Don't just come here, go on welfare, and have babies. That had better not be the dream you speak of. Finally, I would say, please forgive us if you can. We live in a great country but, that doesn't mean we know anything about where you come from. Most Americans are ignorant of world affairs. Jeez, most of us won't learn a second language, like they do everywhere else in the world. Don't expect much from us, were just not up to it. This is a dangerous time in history for all of us.

I have been a imigrant i went to canada becuse i needed a job, I did it legally and everything was great. yeah it was a pain in the butt, and took forever. However i now get to enjoy the benfits of being in canada. I as a american do not have problems with immigrant i have a problem with illegal immgrants. They should be happy though, If they where in other countries, they would just go to jail untill they die, or worse. I think america is one of the most relaxed nations on it's immigration policies.
