Barney Fife appeared on The Andy Griffith Show from the show's beginning in 1960 until 1965, when Knotts left the show to pursue a career in feature films. It is explained that Barney Fife had left Mayberry to take a job as a detective in Raleigh. Knotts reprised the character in guest appearances each season until The Andy Griffith Show left the air in 1968. He would also reprise it in the reunion film Return to Mayberry in 1986, by which time Fife has moved back, become acting sheriff, and was running for sheriff himself.

When Don Knotts was playing Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show, the show was producing 35 shows a season, about double the amount of episodes you get in a season, today. From the beginning (1960), Don Knotts was already branching out in other directions in programs such as The Steve Allen Plymouth Show, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis and movies Wake Me When It's Over and The Last Time I Saw Archie. Meanwhile, Knott's popularity continued to climb. In 1963 he appeared on The Red Skelton Hour, movies It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Move Over Darling, with Doris Day, Chuck Connors and James Garner. In In 1964, Knotts appeared on The Red Skelton Show (again), The Joey Bishop Show and movie The Incredible Mr. Limpet. In 1965, Knotts starred in The Ghost and Mr. Chicken... all the while still filming 35 episodes a season By that time, Knotts was exhausted and more movie roles were being offered. So, rather than keeping the pace, he decided to concentrate on feature films and guest appearances.

Barney Fife Andy Griffith Show

To me, when Don Knotts left the show, that was the end of The Andy Griffith Show. With the exception of Don/Barney making appearances here and there, the remaining episodes stunk. Andy was no longer a joyful, carefree and jolly. Instead, he became a grouchy old jerk who snapped at anyone including Opie. Trying to replace Barney with Warren Ferguson(Jack Burns) didn't work as no one really could stand him including Andy, who ended up firing him for that sleepwalking incident with Helen Crump, who had become even grouchier. The show really should've ended as planned when Don left.

Andy Griffith didn't know how long the show would run & told don it would most likely would only run 5 season, so as they got closer to the 5th season & nothing was said about another season Don decided to sing with a movie contract. Once he did sing he found out the show was going into season 6 but it was now to late for Don to continue on it. Andy wasn't happy with this. They had no choice but to write him out. Then with out Don the shows ratings went down so Andy had to do something to bring them back up. He decided to try color but it was Don the people wanted back. He brought new people on to help the ratings but it was Don they missed. So Andy was able to get Don back a guest star for some of the shows & the Return To Mayberry Movie.

It was sad that Don left the show. I wish he could have found a way to do films and The Andy Giffith show at the same time. Even if it meant just having a slim recurring role on the show. I mean perhaps he could had found time to do perhaps eight episodes per season - and they could have been drawn out - so he could have done a film during the seasons. I mean the Andy Griffith show had such a different vibe during the last two years.

Don and Andy did remain friends and worked together some on the show Matlock in the late 80's Early 90's. However I agree with most of you the Andy Griffith show never was the same without Don and now that it is 2017 and we have Netflix I find myself watching re-runs of seasons 1-5 only.... I grew up with the color episodes re-runs and remember my parents making a huge deal of watching Wheel of Fortune vs The Mayberry reunion in 1986... imagine that kiddo's a house with only 1 television..... OHHH THE HORROR. !!

it was the fifth season, I think. I remember that he either won 5 emmys for his role or was nominated 5 times but each year he was recognized for his work on the andy griffith show. I think it was because of the movies he started to do. there was a show on the biography station about him some time back. I liked him.
