So many people keep saying that we are "saved" by jesus being crucified.
I still really do not get it.How does someone being tortured to death "save" someone?
Explain that to me.How does it work?
I've done something bad, so god says "O.K., I know what to do, uh, I'll let you torture my child until he dies, yeah, that'll make everything right again".
This is what is required?
(What kind of father would do that to their child anyway? I'm a father and I would never do anything to hurt my child.)
If someone said that you had done something wrong, and to make it right, you would have to torture their child to death, you would think they were nuts.
HOW does that make anything right again?
How does that "save" you from this place that your god made and sends us to by default?
It makes no sense!
And while I'm at it, why the whole "I NEED to be worshipped, it's all about ME, I made you for the express purpose of worshipping me, do it or else suffer eternally"?

After reading the above responses, one key ingredient is missing here: the fact that a perfect man (Adam) sinned and brought sin into the whole world (Romans 5:12). The sacrifice of animals was insufficient because the law required an EXACT restitution to buy back what was lost. That meant that only a perfect man could satisfy the penalty for all things to be equal.

Something else that must be understood about the term "son": obviously, God did not give birth to anyone and those who accept the Trinity doctrine believe that Jesus IS God. In Scripture, the term "son" is a synonymn for "in the image of" (Phillipians 2: 5-8). Jesus is God's Son in that he was the image of God the Father. The Bible says that no man has seen God he had to take on a form that we would be able to look upon.

It can be a very complicated concept for people who are not well scholared in it, so I hope I haven't complicated it for you more than before, if you are truly interested in the answer and not simply trolling.

I've had a problem with this too. No one can really explain it.
The best explaination I have recieved is that back in the day, everytime you asked forgiveness from God, you had to sacrifice an animal. But Jesus died as the ultimate sacrifice so we didn't ever have to do that again. We can just ASK for forgiveness. Without a sacrifice.
How everyone knew this, I don't know. We really don't know. The Bible was edited so many times, the people who edited it included their own opinions. But that's just my opinion.
Look into the Gnostic religion, some scholars explain why this doesn't make any sense to people. AND it gives scientific analyzation to a lot of the Bible. They try to prove things, instead of repeating what people tell them.

I'm with you dude. It doesn't make sense to me either, but I was raise in a southern baptist church. So, I tried to make sense of it. This is what I came up with.

You must tie history around the Bible. You can't read one verse and define faith. However, many preachers do just that.

However, JESUS was a challenge to the Church. At that time in history, the people had to worship the King and through the King is the gateway to HEAVEN. JESUS said to the people that another man can't get you into HEAVEN, but through my actions is the gateway to my FATHER and eternal life.

So, in return, the church punished and bandish JESUS to death for his direct challenge to the church authority. Because JESUS didn't give in to the church, he received the most brutal punishment known to man and eventually death. It is through that suffering where people began to believe in themselves and not the King. The people was to see that they too was a man like JESUS and if they emulate his WORDS and ACTIONS, they they too can go to HEAVEN.

However, today, the churches do not practice what they preach. We have members following a man, the preacher and it is he who can show them the way to HEAVEN. Wrong, churches today stands for what JESUS was against. The preachers today pimp the people wallets just as the Kings then taxed the people. People back then believed in this just as most people do today about his/her pastor. All that money end up in a 14000 sq/ft home, Bently car, etc. for the pastor. They are creating a Heaven on earth for him while the people of the congregation suffer. Hence, the predictions of the end of time in the Bible and the return of JESUS himself. Times today is very similar to then when JESUS walked the earth.

But, that's my twist on things. Moreover, you must study religion on your own and understand the history in the regions at those times. Some of the theogoloy can be applied today. Don't allow the religious fanatics control you mind.

These are many disparate questions, but I will try to respond to them as best I can.

First, you need to understand the Jewish sacrificial system. God set up a system with Moses that there were things you weren't supposed to do (the 613 commandments in the Law), and He gave Moses ways to attone for them. Certain things required offerings of grain, others of wine, some of cattle, goats, doves, pigeons, sheep or oxen. The more serious sins require more or bigger animals. On certain days, the cheif priest would also make a sacrifice for the entire tribe or nation to attone for any unknown sins. This involved dozens of goats or sheep or bulls.

The reason, which is outlined later in the book of Romans, is that the price of sin is death. Because there is sin, something must die. In order for the sin to be covered by the death of another, the one who dies must be faultless. This is why the animals that were sacrificed were required to be pure and without defect.

Fast forward a couple thousand years. God sends his son down. Jesus lives a life without sin. He is then sacrificed as an atonement for our sin. Because he was without sin, he was able to be a sacrifice for us, just like the chief priest would make a sacrifice for the people.

Second, you have to understand that this wasn't something that God decided on later. This was His plan from the beginning. John says that Jesus was there with God in the very beginning (John 1). As soon as Adam and Eve were tossed out of the Garden of Eden, God spoke to Lucifer and told him that the son of the woman would crush the head of the snake as the snake bit his heel. Not that I agree with Mel Gibson very often, but he got the reference right in "The Passion" when Jesus crushed the serpent under his foot.

So salvation is basically getting your tab paid. Since the price of sin is death and all have sinned, someone needs to pay for it. Jesus, although he would have liked there to be another way, willingly chose to pay that debt. So salvation wasn't about torturing Jesus, but about justice and fairness. God set up a rule, and He stuck with it.

Which is more fair: for God to not require that people have consequences for their actions, or for Him to have people pay a price for what they do?

As to God being selfish and juvenile, consider this. If you were the ultimate power in the universe, omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent (among other things), what do you think you should deserve? What about the people you rule over, are benevolent to and offer free gifts to, what do you desire of them? You will most likely desire love, honor and respect due your position.

It's not that God is needy, but rather that we are. God could just as easily not created anything, and been content in His completeness. But He decided that He wanted to create us (and everything else) to better show His love.

Hell is a by-product of justice. Because God is just, He has to follow through with his justice. If a judge in court decides to let a murderer go free without any consequences, would he be just? No, he would be a terrible judge. Why should God be any different? God's sentence is either community service or jail, just like any judge.

I hope that helped explain a little.

Okay it works like this.. People did bad things and according to the Bible or God if someone does something bad they are to be punished and shall go to hell. Well the people back then where suppose to be all damned to death for their evil that they have committed. So Jesus Christ said okay look here God I am going to give myself up for everyone's bad doings. So Jesus took all the punishment and got killed for humanity. Also Catholics believe in Saints and the Virgin Mary not about this "its all about me, worship me" thing you got going on. Obviously you dont go to church or have read the bible. God Bless you child satan

God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one. Jesus was God in the flesh while He was on this earth. We are all sinful and deserve eternal death; however God sent Jesus as a sacrifice for all of our sins. His death on the cross is a visual and human expression of that sacrifice and His love for us. God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to die for us. You can accept that and accept Jesus into your heart, then repent from your wrong-doings and you will have everlasting life. If you deny Christ, then you are denying God and will suffer the consequences.

I don't think Jesus needed to be worshipped he wanted people to follow his lead. Basically Jesus said he would be willing to die for others and he did. His whole life was about love, compasion and forgiveness. Even as he hung on the cross he forgave those that put him there.

If more people acted like Jesus (instead of like christians) there would be much less suffering in this world.

try looking at it more from the "outside the box" Jesus Christ was a ---bear with me-- a way of God telling us, he loves us this much, that he would let this happen. Also it was the way to save us from going through it...i know its kinda a hard thing to grasp, cause i dont i could give up my baby for that cause, but thats whats so perfect. it shows how much he cares about us, and beside that, Jesus rose again and sat at the side of his father in heaven...sorry if this just screwed you up more, hope you find the answers your lookin for

I am a Christian and I too am confused on the crucifiction thing but I don't think it is a bout worshipping Him so much as it is about loving Him. When you love truly love someone do you not want to be the best for that person? Same thing goes with God. His whole message is about LOVE.

Well first of all Jesus was actually God himself in the flesh (his earthly body) He was tortured because they did not believe that he was the Christ, just as a lot of people still don't believe it today. He did this so that humans could overcome death. When man first ate from the tree of knowledge it separated him from Christ because no sin could be in the Garden of Paradise, so man must die. God told them in the beginning "Do Not eat from the tree of knowledge in the middle of the Garden, because if you do you shall surely die."
He created us to Love Him and that is our sole purpose.
