I received a bunch of thumbs down when I defended Christianity claiming that "Not all Christians are morons". The funny thing was most of the thumbs down were from Christians.

No, you didn't miss anything. They are people like you and I.

The reason that you may have received a thumbs down (or two) is because some of my Christians brothers refuse to give them any credit. It is too bad that they feel compelled to "get back" at anyone...then they choose thumbs down to judge and poke hatred.

I apologize for my near-sighted, judgemental church family.

Imagine what christians are then, if Atheists are not people... you know, since christians don't believe in evolution.

Or maybe they're just led to think everyone is made of dirt and therefore none of us are people but we're all dirt.

... maybe that's why you got thumbs down.

Or maybe just because they didn't like you standing up for atheists.

Your statement could be interpreted to mean that any beings without god beliefs are people, but that would leave out all non-human animals, who are indeed atheists too.

Less facetiously, those who gave you thumbs down reveal themselves as arrogant and mean-spirited religious know-it-alls, unfortunately very common among those who think they have "absolute truth."

There's an atheist penguin or two, as well, and a giant fire-breathing Japanese atheist lizard (though I could be wrong; she may be a follower of Shinto).
However, yes, the majority of atheists are people.

Shake it off. . .I get thumbs down all the time, most of the time just for saying what I believe. The question could be "Do you love God?" I'll answer "Yes" and get thumbs down, lol. . .go figure.

Hi Quantrill,

The sad fact is some bible believers really do not think atheists are people. Didn't you know we are godless, amoral, heathen infidels?

This attitude by the extremists in the cult of Jesus is no different than the Nazi condemnation of the Jews or slavery owners toward their slaves. The first step in vilifying your enemy is to dehumanize him. They just normally don’t show their hand so obviously – kind of conflicts with that whole “love thy neighbor” creed.

Any religion that considers itself as doing the will of God considers its enemies as doing the will of the devil. Religion teaches its followers life is simple. Choices are black and white, Good and Evil. There is no gray area. You’re either with us or against us. The Church has brainwashed its flock that the enemy is the atheist. The have dehumanized and demonized us. We are a threat to their carefully constructed monopoly of make-believe, their guild of the gullible.

The Church is taking a page from its playbook of the past. In the same way the Church fathers vilified the Jews for killing Christ, the current fanatics have tried to denigrate atheists for killing the concept of God. Just as the Jews were accused of deicide so too now have atheists. (A better description would be filicide - the killing of one's child).

It also shouldn’t surprise anyone that non-thinkers would have such a prejudiced view toward non-believers. As Bel-air above pointed out: “For the longest time; women weren't considered people, at least, not equal people, then it was African Americans, now; it's Atheists, and Gays. When will they EVER learn!!!" Potentialxenergy also hit the nail on the head: “it's easier to deny a person their humanity than to learn to accept that people have different world-views?”

The anti-atheist is certainly in good company…”Once appointed to the Chancellorship of Germany, Hitler banned freethought organizations and launched an “anti-godless” movement. In a 1933 speech he declared: ‘We have . . . undertaken the fight against the atheistic movement, and that not merely with a few theoretical declarations: we have stamped it out.’” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persecution_of_atheists)

"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."
- Former U.S. President George H. W. Bush - 1987

"The cardinal doctrine of a fanatic's creed is that his enemies are the enemies of God."
— Andrew Dickson White

Few people can be happy unless they hate some other person, nation or creed.
— Bertrand Russell

We've got just enough religion to hate each other, but not enough religion to love each other.
— Jonathan Swift

It is wonderful how much time good people spend fighting the devil. If they would only expend the same amount of energy loving their fellow men, the devil would die in his own tracks of ennui.
— Helen Keller

Faith in God necessarily implies a lack of faith in humanity.
— Barbara G. Walker

Atheists might also reconsider why they'd even want to be associated with a human race led by bigotry and prejudice that has done so much evil in the name of religion. Steven Weinberg said: “Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.” Why should we be ashamed that this group does not consider us one of their own?

George W. Foote said: “It will yet be the proud boast of women that they never contributed a line to the Bible.” The same compliment could be paid to the atheist, agnostic and skeptic. Let us wear our exclusion and expulsion from their version of humanity as a badge of honor not shame.

An Atheist loves himself and his fellowman instead of a god. An atheist knows that heaven is something for which we should work now -- here on earth -- for all men together to enjoy.
— Madalyn Murray O'Hair

“I am certain and have always stressed that the destination of mankind is to become more and more humane. The ideal of humanity has to be revived.”
— Albert Schweitzer, (1875-1965)
