When you say "God is love" you aren't saying anything about the God in itself, but about the way you feel we must respond to the God,right?

No, we are speaking of a love from God. God's motive for doing anything for us is love. It is a Godly love, not like human love. In fact, we can't fully understand His great love, but we can experience it.

No, I think that what John meant by the expression "God is love" is that anything done by God is done from a benevolent motive. God has no malice.

No, God really is love. He is not ONLY love, but he is love -- and all TRUE love comes FROM God.

And yes, we are commanded to love God.
