Because god doesn't exist.
Why do you want it to be more complicated than that?

Sorry, I was always a disbeliever, I guess I have a skeptical nature.
Certainly the Bible contradicts itself.
Your God even contradicts itself. In one verse God claims that his word is absolute and his judgments are final and in the next verse he is being haggled with or reconsidering what to do.
God is also totally on the bribe system, and he just loves the smell of burning flesh. That is what sacrifices are all about.

It wasn't a turning off, it was an opening of eyes.
I did fully understand the Bible, and I've read it through several times. No problems with my comprehension skills. As much as I do appreciate the condescension...
You can run a simple search and find lists of hundreds of contradictions in the Bible.

Wow, you're saying that only those above 21 can give a "serious answer"? Sir, I'm 17, and almost certain that I am a bit more intelligent than you are.
Psalm 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.
Jeremiah 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the Lord: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.

Okay I went through Youth Group and I went through the stage where I turned myself over to christ because I thought their was no one else who would listen. Currently I don't know what to believe. I mean no one is alive today to say that each event in the bible is true. A flaming bush? Come on get practical. An entire river turning to blood? Ya okay. Now how come that doesn't happen today? How come it only happened during that time period? So you might say because faith isn't as strong or that's when they were trying to get people to believe so they had to make a strong introduction well don't get mad at me for what I believe (or don't believe). So God supposedly created Adam and Eve and that's how we are all connected, right? So why Earth? Why just Earth? Look at it from an astrologist's point of view...Our star (which is the Sun) is the center of our solar system, our solar system is one of MANY in our galaxy. Their are millions upon millions of galaxies out in the Universe, so why would God put us on only one planet? Their are studies going on right now to look for exoplanets (which are planets in other solar system's) that have life. They have found a couple that may have life on them or atleast they think they might be suitable for life. So how do you know their isn't life out there? Don't pretend like you know everything...you can't travel back in time to when these exact events happened so don't say you know it's true, because you don't. I'm not saying I know everything because I know I don't....but be open to the possibility that we aren't the only one's in the universe, and if one day they do find life in another solar system somewhere, wouldn't that contradict the Bible? The whole Adam and Eve thing? Their's no proof that God exists at all. Jesus may have existed but so did a man named St. Nicholas who today we know as Santa but he's not real (any more). I didn't turn my back on God. I am only 18. I don't understand everything but I understand where I am coming from. This answer is totally, 100% serious. I'm just not going to pray to someone I don't need to confide in. If I need help I will get help from someone who can help me, not hope that I'll get help from someone I don't even know exists or not.

I'm not an 'atheist' per se, just not a Christian. The Bible contradicts itself in many instances.
For one, it was not written as a single book, as it's presented today. It was written over the course of 800 years! The earliest sections of the Old Testament were written in the 6th century BC, the youngest in the 1st cent. AD (Genesis in fact includes passages from the earliest to the latest period). The New Testament was written from the 1st cent. AD to the 4th cent. AD. You honestly believe God inspired every single writer? The fact is, there are dozens of books lost since the Middle Ages. There are other Gospels, other Apocalypses, other Epistles, etc. that have not been included in the canonical text.
Secondly, contradictions in the Bible are not as dominant as contradictions created by the Church in the following centuries. For instance, Jesus says don't pray in public--go to your room and close the door. Yet the Church claims the 3rd commandment (or 4th, depending on Catholic/Protestant numbering) requires one to go to church. Not so. 'Remember the Sabbath' has nothing whatsoever to do with 'church.' There was no 'church' when the Commandments were compiled. Secondly, Jesus says he is not equal with God on several occasions, one of which talks about things he doesn't know but God does. Yet Christians consider him to be God. Jesus never said he was. He said he was one with the Father, but he taught that ANYONE could become one with the Father. He never portrayed himself to be unique in that aspect; only unique in that he was trying to teach people how to do it.
The fact is, the Bible is a piece of literature, one that takes influences from numerous sources and cultures (Sumerian, Egyptian, Babylonian, Greek, Zoroastrian, etc.). It is not 'fact', it is not the 'Word of God.' It is literature. It did not just appear, it is not unique in world civilization, and it is not special. Study other cultures, other religions, and you'll come to find that much of what you believe to be unique to Christianity (or Judaism or Islam) in fact derives from older traditions. Jesus himself is not the first 'son of God' or 'Messiah' or 'miracle worker.'

The bible talks about Jesus of Nazareth. Nazareth did not exist as a town then. There never was a Nazareth 2000 years ago, so Jesus COULD NOT have been from Nazareth. Also, he is referred to as a Nazarite and a Nazarene which was a sect of people who did not were scholars, did not cut their hair or beards and were vegetarians. One simple example not of a contradiction but an out right lie. I found far to many of those in the bible and the people who try and shove it down our throats.

Its not just the contradiction in the bible they don't like. It's the fact that people keep insisting that these stories are literal. A talking donkey? come on dude.
And they can show a LOT of contradictions. The bible is widely interpreted.

ok, first up, biblical contradictions. here are three off of the top of my head,
1: The number of beasts in the ark
GEN 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.
GEN 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, GEN 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.
2: How many stalls and horsemen?
KI1 4:26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
CH2 9:25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.
3: PRO 4:7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
ECC 1:18 For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.
1 Cor.1:19: "For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and wil bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent."
those are all internal condradictions found in the bible. for a complete list see: http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/jim_meritt/bible-contradictions.html
As for why i was turned off to god, thre are a number of reasons honestly.
My parents always told me to think for myself, and question my desions and be able to determine why I made certain decisions.
Also, when I was young my grandfather suffered a slow, crippling death because of cancer. I remember at the funeral the priest said that it the lord has a reason for everything. I wondered what possible reason the lord could have for inflicting such a debilitating and painful death on a good hearted and caring man.
A similar situation occoured in my senior year in high school. My best friend was mowing his lawn at ten thirty in the morning. A drunk driver cam speeding onto the lawn and hit him. He wasnt killed but he had severe brain damage and the doctors had to cut out almost half of his brain and could only keep him alive on life support.
Again the priest said that it all part og Gopds great design.
This is absolute nonsense. Why does the design of an all knowing all pwerful and "all good" creator include so much unnecessary and completely avoidable suffering?
The concepts of free will and suffering are completely incompatible with the concept of an all knowing, all powerful and benevolent creator.
The atheistic worldview requires no extraneous effort to reconcile the world at large with a religious take on things. I dont need to apologise for or justify horrendous tragedy and epic natural disasters with a god who supposedly 'cared' for us yet continues to inflict grevious harships and disasters on loyal servants.
To me tragedy is tragedy, not part of a mysterious plan that humans arent meant to understand, and not punishment for the acceptance of homosexuality or turning away from god. Its just a sad thing and it's occourance inspires me to help out any way I can and to be there for people who may need me.

You are asking the question wrong. As an atheist, how can I be turned away from something I do not believe exists? I might as well turn my back on the Purple People Eater and trash-talk the pink mini unicorns. That makes no sense. In order to turn away from something, that something must first exist.

If there is a God, then he's incredibly cruel and manipulative.
How many wars have been in his name(s)?
How many people/innocents/soldiers have been slaughtered or forced into submission and subservient roles because of "evangelism?"
And you can't say he didn't see it all coming. He's God, remember.
I prefer to think that men are simply foolish and brutal, rather than picture an almighty force playing head games with mankind.
