Money seems to be the most prevalant god here in this world.
People worship it, need it, people can see it, feel it, spend it, save it. We certainly are living in a material world.
G-ds promise takes faith, belief, hope. His spirit is in you.. and you can either make more room for it, or you can chase it away.
People who win the lottery are some of the most unhappy people in the world. They think they have found great wealth, yet have not.
Poor people are some of the most happy in the world. They are much more likely to find the true treasure through a relationship with G-d.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The rich person has money, but is poor toward the Lord, since he is distracted by his wealth. The prayer and confession he makes to the Lord are small, weak, and of no real effect.
So when the rich person depends upon the one who is poor, and supplies him with what he needs, he ... that by helping the one who is poor will find his recompense before God.
For the poor person is rich in his petition and confession, and his petition has a great effect before God, And so the rich person supplies everything to the one who is poor without hesitation. And then the poor person having his needs supplied by the one who is rich, prays to God and thanks him for the one who has given him what he needs....
And so both accomplish their work. The poor person works at his prayer in which he is rich and which he received from the Lord; and he gives it back to the Lord who supplied it to him in the first place. So too the rich person does not hesitate to supply his wealth to the poor person since he received it from the Lord.
-The Shepherd of Hermas
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately, there is not enough giving or praying going on.
Thanks for the question, livinginthetruth, and may G-d bless you.

Well the lottery doesn't 'promise' anything. But mathematically speaking, you're more likely to win the lottery (doubtful though) than having 'God' answer your prayers. There are no promises of God. There are simply stories written by others regarding promises of God. Do people with an education honestly believe there is a magical spirit who is watching over you and answering your prayers?
I'm not saying there is no 'God,' but the universal spirit is not a father figure sitting on a throne with his 'son' on his right hand watching over you. They are bedtime stories, just as Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are bedtime stories. It's time to grow up a little.
But I'm not saying you can depend on the lottery. Belief in that is pretty ignorant as well.

Greed, of course. But, the lottery doesn't promise anything. It is what it is: you throw down your hard-earned money in the hopes of striking it rich while you do so against tremendous odds. Yup. Sounds like greed to me.
I hope that you weren't ruling out that Christians play the lottery, since they do. So, re-phrasing the question: Why do Christians who believe in the promise of God play the lottery?

Somebody has to win the lottery eventually, but it isn't absolutely sure that there is a god. Also, the bible is not necessarily true, so...why believe every line in it?

Your odds of winning the lottery are much greater than are your odds of having a prayer answered! That's why! Get real and stop believing in fairy tales!

The lottery isn't making promises, it promotes itself as it is in truth and that is as a game of chance.
