He declared he will never let his children have dolls, stuffed animals, or action figures, as that would be idolatry. WHAT? I tried explaining that those toys are useful in children learning various social roles and skills....isn't it only idolatry if you WORSHIP them??? He even thinks a bird necklace I have is bad!!!!

Yow. Well, I suppose that his beliefs are in line with a certain extreme, literal reading of the commandment against graven images. But they are certainly far, far stricter than, oh, say, 99.9% of Christian teachings, so far as I've seen.

If I were you, I would be alarmed at this point. Your boyfriend is showing that he has an extremist, highly restrictive view on religion, and unless you want yourself and any children you may have to have to live under his rules (since I doubt that someone with such a strict view of Christian beliefs would be likely to embrace compromise on the matter), I would suggest you take some time to deeply consider your long-term compatibility on these sort of issues.

If you look at how much of these things are craved by children and how they distract them from so many other things in life, then I suppose it might be called Idolatry if Becky Jr wants the latest doll rather than embracing the love of God.

Don't be alarmed though.

If he is deadly serious and unwilling to compromise then calmly leave. After all if he's unwilling to compromise, what will come next?

I would be alarmed. If someone takes something so seriously there are some underlying issues there. To deprive a child of toys will cause a child some issues too. It is idolatry if you worship them not play with them as children do. (and people think I'm a freak!!)

It sounds like he is on the extreme end of Christianity and you are not. If you two hold very different beliefs - especially about raising children - you may want to reconsider developing a relationship with him. These disagreements will only intensify if you are both set in your ways.

It wouldn't *alarm* me, but it would be something that made me think it's time to part ways as a romantic couple.

I would be concerned if I were considering marrying and having children with him.
What else is he a fanatic about?
Should not you two see a counselor if you are considering keeping him around?

At least he is consistent in his extremist literalist interpretation of Ex 20:4-5"no image of ANYTHING on earth"unlike those who ban religious images ,even though they were commanded by God in Ex 25:18-19, but not other images, especially the graven images of coins.

If you haven't already planned an escape route, do it now, and carry it out fast. If it's your place, change the locks and leave his junk outside.

His behaviour is indicative of control issues, and could very well escalate with time. Make the break while you can, and be very glad you hadn't had any children with him.

Order a voodoo doll from an on-line site in New Orleans and send it to him, then say Psych. If you don't burst into flames find a new BF

he's taking the idolatry thing WAY too seriously.I'm a Christian and even I know that having action figures and such isn't idolatry.

Wow, you have the same first name & last initial as me! I almost put that as my display name too...wow, creepy.... ANYWAY yeah, idolatry is if you bow down and worship them, not drool all over them as babies do...I would just try to reason with him and try to talk him out of thinking that (strange) way.

Hope you can get it all straightened out. :)
