Of course you can.
BUT ----- Do you know DOS (Disk Operating System)? That's what us old-timers used before Windows made us all lazy. DOS is a text-based operating system, Windows id a graphical User Interface (GUI as in GOOEY).
If you decide to play DOS games in Windows I would try to do a "Properties" setting on the executable(application) for the DOS game. Like make it play in a full window.
WHY?
Well, If you shell out to DOS, your mouse driver may not be loaded and the game may not run unless you have a DOS mouse driver which you must first load. (Install the mouse in DOS mode, then go to where your game was installed (CD (directory name(folder), then do a DIR/W/P command and see which is the application file to load it (filename.exe) is usually the one, if it is old enough, it may be filename.com or even a filename.bat.
Ain't ya glad ya asked?
Seriously, try to run it in a full window and forget all the hassle.
PS: if you have a DOS mouse driver, get in touch with me, I still have some old DOS games around I wanna play agin as soon as I dig them up from the pyramids in Egypt.

It depends. 16 bit DOS games, not likely. 32 bit DOS games, maybe in Compatibility mode.

TIP: The really good DOS games didn't die, look for the Windows version.

You only need one program, once and for all:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net
Can run practically any DOS game under Windows, Linux, Mac...
