Wolf
Darkness
Superstition - in Medieval times, seeing a black dog was actually worse than seeing a black cat. It was considered a sure sign of death to come.
Grimm - name given to black dog in Medieval superstition (they mention this in Harry Potter; it is historically true that this myth existed)
Barghest - another name for the same dog
Anubis - jackal-headed god of the dead in Egypt
Cerberus - 3-headed hound of the Greek underworld Hades that ensured spirits could not get out after entering.
Blitz ("lightning" in German)
I was going to say Schwartz ("black" in German), but someone else already said it! :)
Thor - Norse God of Thunder & Storms
Zeus - Greek God of Thunder & the Skies
Ebony, Sable, Onyx, Jet, Ink - synonyms of "black"
Deimos - "fear", also one of Mars's moons.
Gothic, Goth, Gothika
Vandal - Germanic language also spoken by the Goths (besides Gothic)
Beornulf - "warrior wolf" in Old English (Gothic era)
Earpwald - "dark ruler" in Old English
Black Sabbath - after the heavy metal band
Judas
Rogue

Obsession
Okavango - African river that never reaches the sea. I've always liked the name for a black animal, don't know why. :)
Draco
Drakar - French for "dragon"
Bacchus - Roman god with dragon attributes
Cetus - Greek dragon king
Rio, Negro, Rio Negro - referring to the part of the Amazon river where the waters run black. "Negro" means "black" in Spanish, "Rio" means "river".
Sorcerer
Wicca - if it's a female
Gevaudan - French town where a great black wolf-like creature roamed in the 1700's (the movie "Brotherhood of the Wolf" would be a pretty good reference)
Loup-Garou - "werewolf" in French
Werewolf -it's actuallly very similar in German: Werwolf
Lycan - refers to werewolf breed
Vampir - "vampire" in German

Hope these help, at least as inspiration. It depends a lot on your shepherd's personality. If you want to go goth with his/her name, the 1st link below has a list of common Gothic names from the Middle Ages. There are some unusual ones in there, that might help. The 2nd link has a list of names of German origin with their meanings, since he's a "German" shepherd. :)

How about going for it's dominant feature or action and the putting it through a traslator? For example shadow in German is Schatten. That way you could even give your dog a cute name, but no one would know!

Male: Zeus or Achilles (Killer for short)

Female: Mindy (I know, cute, but I like that name for a female dog) or Katrinka (my aunt had a black german shepherd with this name and it was cool because it was different)

Shadow is a good one, although it is pretty common. Bear is also good. You could go with something more powerful like Spartacus or Brute. Personally I think Max is great for black dogs.

Well it depends on if its a male or female. Here are some names I hope they help...
vulcan, ares, zeus, (male)
helios this name could probably be used for male or female.
Nuka, (both) Zera(female).
You could also see how the dogs act, what is it's likes and dislikes
Things like that, that's how I named my dog, I couldn't think for the life of me what to call him, so I had in the fridge a bottle of yukon Jack, I let him sniff it and he was sneezing like crazy and that is how I come up with his name(yukon jack)
