Do you think it is right to send 20 million Mexicans back to a life of poverty. Or should we let them stay knowing it will possibly hurt Americans in the future? I am having trouble with this.

I think it depends on how they got here and how long they've been here. I used to work as a social worker with people with mental retardation. I had one family in which the Dad was legal and all the other members (Mom & 8 kids) had come in illegally. 9/11 has really mucked up the immigration system. This family had been trying to become citizens since 2000. They even tried to hire a lawyer who told them there was nothing anyone could do. I think people such as these should definitely receive amnesty. I think it should be on a case-by-case basis.

There shouldn't have been a need for amnesty in the first place. We should have done the right thing for them from the beginning. As far as I can see, making them "illegal" is nothing but a thinly veiled rationalization for allowing a cheap, second-class, easily controlled labor force. Hey, amigo, step out of line and it's back to wherever you came from. And don't you dare ask for any rights or benefits because we "own" you.
Anyone who wants to work hard and contribute positively to society should be allowed to stay. I'm not saying all of them want to, but those who do, I have no problem with. We Americans don't have any God-given right to the land itself. Most of it we stole and conquered off the Native Americans and Mexicans anyway (oftentimes through the breaking of treaties) and then we pretend that's the way it always has been.

BTW, it's more than just Mexicans (and Central and South Americans, for that matter) who are here illegally.

No amnesty and yes they can go home and come here though the proper process just like we would have to do if we were to live in Mexico.... It would be more cost effective if we helped them get what rights they need on their own turf...... Impoverish mentalities don't change without help ! Either do educational issues....

Regan already tried amnesty and it didn't work. I have a friend that is here legally and I think that if the illegals get amnesty, her and the others that came legally, should get a refund.

As a Christian I believe in following the laws of the land, and they are here illegally, and should be punished as such. If that means sending them back, then so be it. They don't have to live in poverty, they can come here legally.

Jesus told us to follow the laws of man unless they go against the laws of god. i have yet to see anything in the bible that says god allows illegal immigration. compassion for our fellow man is a good thing, don't get me wrong, but these people are still here illegally and should be sent back to their country. and don think i have anything against immigration either. legal immigration is what made this country great. what needs to be done is to get Mexico, and many other countries, to build their economies so that the people would normally prefer to stay in their own county, unless they really want to become a US citizen. remember that most of these illegal immigrants only come here to make money to send back to their families in their country. look at Canadians, for the most part the ones that want to be Canadian citizens, stay Canadian citizens, they just come here to visit, and get quality medical care in a timely manner.

There should be a cutoff date. All illegal immigrants living in the country before that date should be allowed to apply for citizenship. If they do not comply, then they should be deported. However, the government should do everything it can to help them in the naturalization process.

It depends on how long they have been here, if you ask me. Yes, I think we should send all newcomers back. It will help Americans in the future, because more benefits will be available to them. We have to take care of our own FIRST.

Not to mention the resulting poverty in the US from the MASSIVE tax increase it would require to round up 20 million people and kick them out, and keep them out.

Anyone who come here legally is welcome!

Illegals cannot expect to be welcomed with open arms.
I worked tirelessly sending e-mails, letters, and making phone calls to Congress to oppose that awful legislation.

Come here legally, learn the language, pay taxes. If not, deport them.
