Sub is hand held and is used in close-order combat to spray an area, small bore rounds.
Generally a "Machine" gun is an automatic weapon that has machinery to do the loading and unloading of each round. This can be a single barrel or a gatling type. They have grown over the years and the army ones are now two-man operated/carried. In the land of our enemies, they are often mounted on the back of a Toyota flat bed truck.
Rounds can be 50 calibre or 25mm AA.

the right answer is....a sub machine gun can be selected to fire one round at a time. a machine gun is just that a machine gun 24/7 and not able to fire single shots. machine guns are able to select short burst or continuous burst but not single
if it were based on caliber then the Armys' m-24or the USMC M40A3 which are sniper rifles would be machine guns since they fire a 7.62 mm round like the machine gun m-60 when they are bolt action single shot rifles.

machine guns fire full size round such as the 30 aught 6 or 50 caliber bullet pretty much anything but pistol ammo. sub machine guns use smaller round usually pistol ammunition such as the 9mm x 19mm round or .45 acp for example. These are usually very light and easy to manuever with. These are a favorite among counter terrorist organizations for cqb (close quarter battles). Both are good but only in certain environments for example sub machine guns are not good for fighting in large areas such as fields. Machine guns are not good in close quarter battles since they are unwieldly.

I could be wrong but i believe that a sub machine gun is of a smaller caliber and usually uses less ammunition per clip while a machine gun is very large and powerful operated with long belts of ammunition...

Back around WWI and WWII, machineguns had to be mounted on something such as a ship, plane, jeep and even a tri-pod. Anything rifle size was considered a sub machine gun.

A SMG uses a pistol round. A machine gun uses a larger round, either a rifle round or one designed for a MG.

A sub machine gun is pretty much a single man portable, easy to set up and use weapons.... For example the M249 SAW.. throws a bunch of ammo downrange, easily carried and serviced by one person
A machine gun is ususally a beast... such as the M2 Browning .50 cal its carried by a team of more than one person.. assembled into position and takes a crew to service it ie changing barrels... relaoding etc etc

Depends on which language you speak. The Germans call their submachine guns like the MP5 and MP7 "maschinenpistole" which literally means machine pistol. The Russians call their submachine guns like the PPSh-41 "pistolet pulyemot" or machine pistol. We tend not to use the "machine pistol" terminology.
