Recently took cough syrup and flu tablets as a substitute to sleeping pills, because it caused drowsiness. Would it harm?

I dont have sleeping disorders thus i never needed any sleeping pills. But its just that i have to wake up early every monday morning and have trouble sleeping on sunday nights due to my night job over the weekends.

I am pretty sure you did not check with your doctor before you did this. Never take any drug until you check with your doctor. I do not know what type of syrup or flu drug your are taking, I could probably give you a better answer if I new, but please note that if you take 2 or more different types of drugs they can have "DRUG INTERACTIONS" in the body, sometimes they can even be life-threatening, also bear in mind that every single drug without exception has side-effects. Allergies may also be a problem depedning on what type of compound is in the medication that you are taking. I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO CHECK THIS OUT WITH YOUR DOCTOR. Many sleep disorders and problems with sleeping can be psycho-somatic, meaning "it is all within the mind" so please check with your doctor before you do anything. By the way I am a doctor myself

If you only take a sleep aid once a week, you're in no risk of developing a dependence or tolerance, if that's what concerns you. For most people, the antihistamine Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is the most effective sleep aid available without a prescription.

Taking it once or occasionally in appropriate dose wouldn't really cause significant harm but the "real harm" is once you find it working you may be hooked on it and have addiction. There are of course implicated side effects which will only become apparent if you use them frequently. "No medicine is absolutely safe" - bear that in your mind.
