I was cleaning out my cupboards but my husband says food is good forever if it is in aluminum cans. We have 4 cans of tuna that are 3 years old and I want to know how long it really is good and when to throw it out. I think it's too old to keep and want to know why they don't put expiration dates on it. How long can other canned foods be kept, also? Thanks!

Open it and smell. If the odor is good, and the can has not rusted, then canned food, in theory, should keep forever, because all bacteria should have been killed by the canning process (the fish was cooked inside of a sealed can).

i believe that is why is does not expire.

Throw it out. Although tuna is in a can and it will last longer than if it was fresh, it still would be on the verge of...well sucking. If it's tuna in oil I wouldn't even open it up to look. If it's Tuna in water you could take a peak at it, but I would bet you that you will regret that decision as soon as you do it. Anyways, happy cleaning :)

Since there is no experation date on tuna cans, I only keep mine for a year. After that they tend to loose flavor, and taste funny. That's not a good sign. Depending if it's in water or oil, a year would be the longest.

It should have an expiration date on it, that's strange. I think generally it's about 3 years? Not sure.... but they're like $1 a can. Just throw them out if you're unsure!

The lettuce would go off faster than the tuna. 24 hrs for the lettuce, 3 days for the tuna.
