Here in the USA, bicycles must travel on the roads with the cars, going in the same direction and obeying all traffic laws. Bicycles do not belong on sidewalks with the pedestrians.
Where I live, we have bicycle paths, which is a designated thin lane on the far outer side of the road that is just for bikes.

Bicycles should travel on sidewalks and pedestrians should always walk in the streets. The reason is that pedestrians always do a lot less damage to cars than do bicycles. In fact, a lot of times you can just clean up with a gentle hose spray or perhaps a very light scrubbing.

I wouldn't use a pathway because they are too skinny and you may hit a pedestrian. Use the street but don't ride with cars...ride on the far right side of a road to allow cars to pass you.

If you are an adult, then in the road with the cars. They are vehicles. Children play on the sidewalks. Bikes don't need to be on the sidewalk running down little kids. Think a bike won't seriously hurt or kill a child? Think again. That said, kids on bikes should stay off the road. If you are not old enough to drive, you are not old enough to be in the street with your bike. None of these situations are perfect, but statistically speaking this is the best way to reduce accidents.

Because of the nature and age of the street system, particularly in the core area of the City, planning and implementation of facilities for bicycles, pedestrians and other forms of non-motorized transportation has been difficult and has not been given a high priority relative to other community needs.
As peripheral areas grow and develop, however, and as existing arterial roadways, collector and local streets are upgraded, there will be opportunity for bicycle and pathway facilities to evolve systematically and augment the City’s transportation system.
It is probable that such a system will not only enhance transportation, but will increase opportunity for recreational experience by accessing parks and areas of open space. Existing river, stream and drainage corridors are an untapped community resource and afford tremendous opportunity for the development of a pathway system and expanded use of the City’s park, recreational and open space areas.
GOALS:
To develop an integrated on-street non-motorized transportation system for pedestrians and cyclists to augment the traditional motorized vehicle transportation system.
To develop an integrated off-street pathway system for pedestrians, cyclists and similar users to provide recreational opportunity and to augment the traditional motorized vehicle transportation system.
To identify key connections to outlying areas beyond the corporate boundaries of the City to ensure system continuity.
To promote public safety through support, education and awareness of the City’s Police Department Bicycle Patrol Program.
To promote and encourage community and regional development that is more pedestrian and bicycle friendly.

On the street same as cars, your also expected to follow the same rules as car's ie: obey lights and stop signs and signal for turning and changing lanes. Whenever possible you stay as far right as posssible.
The reason for this is you are not a pedestrian, motorcycles are not allowed on the sidewalk and pedestrians are not allowed on the street. It is keeping people in there proper places.

Paths - sidewalks
I live in Michigan, and there are all kinds of people riding in the road or right on the white line on the highway.
I feel bad when I go by them and they fall in the ditch. But they need to get away from traffic, so I dont feel that bad anymore.
I dont allow my kids to play in traffic and nobody else should either.

If u travel on the main road, there are too many rubbish drivers, if you travel on cycle paths, there are drunks and druggies, if u use the pavement old people call u a fecker and train tracks and runways are just too dangerous! What a dilemma u cyclists have. Only fellow cyclists have respect 4 u and me of course.

I personally think that they should be in special bike lanes or foot paths. Its so dangerous when you can't see them and you have to merge into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid them or jump on the breaks! It really creates havoc on the roads when they're busy. Although, if you ride on the foot path, it can be dangerous with cars reversing out of drive ways. They should introduce more bike lanes in popular riding areas.
