What other languages? Most other languages are not as phonetic as people think. Languages evolve. As they evolve, they become more complex. All changing English would do is complicate things even MORE. Everyone would have to learn the new spellings. Then whenever anyone read a book printed before the change, they'd run into the old spellings. In addition to this, there would still be confusion, because the supposed phonetic spelling of a lot of words could go different ways. Ultimately, the problem would not be solved, so there is no point.

Modern English spelling is based on phonetic rules that are learnable. To simplify spelling would mean to change the phonetic rules which has been tried many times. Every time someone changes the spelling of a word, like nite instead of night, it further complicates the language by creating even more options and exceptions. The spelling and pronunciation of words does constantly change over time but not always in ways that simplify or make sense to others. Good luck to those who are trying!

Simplification doesn't mean making it more phonetic necessarily. It's like what they did early in the twentieth century and changed words like "colour" to "color." Some people think there are more words that need this sort of simplification. I am one of them. I think that we should do this to words to make spelling and reading - especially for young students trying to "sound out" words - easier and quicker.

No! Leave it alone, it's cool the way it is with all its idiosyncrasies. By the way I just had to use the spellcheck for that big word there. TG 4 spellcheck.

No, i think english is already fenetically easy.
Ok we have some words like KNIFE or AUSTRALIA that can throw people off, but look at french they have feminine and masculine words, and chinese has 90 dialects...English is quite easy !

I'll take it as it is when compared to other languages.
Take german for example.
Instead of using several words to describe something they just put all the words together to make a new, longer, word.
