...and I want to do the nice, soon-to-be son-in-law thing. I've been invited, along with my girlfriend, over to her parent's house for supper. My girlfriend is giving her mom her birthday present early, because of other arrangements happening in their schedules.

My question is, should I get my girlfriend's mom something? I'm thinking a card, but is this even necessary, or in demonstration of good taste / etiquette?

That is awfully sweet of you to even think of that. Most men wouldnt and if they did, they would never act on it. It would mean a lot to your girlfriend probally if you got something for her mother. I would maybe get a pic of the two of them and make a copy of it and frame it together. Or frame a pic of all of you together. Nothing too drastic. Or get her a gift certificate to a great eating place that her and her husband or daughter can accompany her too and just enjoy. Like Ruth Chris or the Cheese Cake Factory. Something nice like that.
Good luck and you sure are a sweetheart!!!

You're so sweet to think about this! I would say don't get a gift. I'm sure the mom in law has plenty of stuff already around the house. Showing up with a bouquet of flowers and a card is totally acceptable.

if you have been invited over for supper, it is bad etiquette to show up empty handed, always. youshould get her some flowers, not roses, but a nice vase with soem nice flowers, since it is her birthday. if she even has you over for a meal like that again, always bring her a little something, a carnation, flowers (no roses), a box of chocolates, or something small, just to show her appreciaition for having you over and for cooking for you. but for her birthday a card and some nice flowers would be great.

possibly a bracelet, or a chew of jewelery which would be for her contemporary. As for dinner, you will desire to deliver somethig too. Ask what the subject of dinner is, so which you would be able to choose for a magnificent bottle of wine or a barren area. Edit: Yeah, barren area replaced right into a bad thought. I forgot some birthday cake. possibly a container of candy then.

How close are you to the mom? If you're on first name basis, a small gift would be nice. If not, at least a card, even if it's one card signed by the both of you, would be a welcome gesture.
No matter what you do, I'm sure she'll be flattered by your thought.

If you are close to her, then you can get her something other than a card. Usually, when dating someone, I would just get their mother something with the person I'm dating.

You can NEVER go wrong with a bouquet of flowers. I think she will really appreciate it and it's easier then coming up with something to say in a card.
Good Luck!
