replace a trans isnt simple it and if its slipping it will need replacing or rebuilding either way getting the trans out will take a while and need to have mechanical knoledge if it needs replacing its cheaper to sell it and buy a new car.

You would need a friend who has a hoist and a lot of talent to change a transmission on your jeep,I am assuming that it's a 4x4 so the transfer case would have to be removed first, then the transmission, bare in mind this is the readers digest version of the procedure, approximate time to do the job is 8to9 hours even if your friend has the talent I doubt that he has all of the equipment, trans jack impact guns and sockets to remove the nuts and bolts that have been exposed to all kinds of road dirt over the past 13yrs.My advice take it to a shop and get it diagnosed properly first, then you can decide if it needs a transmission, and get more than estimate for the job. Also you should give the dealer the chance to look at it.

If it's an automatic Tranny, It's a big job. Check with aamco or other local tranny shops, then call the better business bureau to see if they had complaints, and more importantly, if they resolved them. If it's a stick shift, then the clutch, pressure plate and bearing probably need to be replaced. Again, a pretty tough job to do at home on a 4 wheel drive.
Good luck

I can't answer that cause i don't know who will be doing it for you. It's not too hard. but then again i do this for a living. My dealership charges 80 an hour and i see less than 20... And i have about 30g's in tools i had to buy myself. If he's done it before i'd say try it. if not it could end up going to the shop on a tow truck and cost more. you'll need tools and a place to do it...

Well first we need to know is it an automatic, or a clutch?
If it has a clutch then you can replace the clutch without replacing the trans. If it is an automatic and is slipping then it will have to be rebuilt. You dident say what trans you have.

For a person that knows about transmissions and 4WD vehicles its not too difficult to do, it just requires the right tools, and a transmission jack, as the newer transmissions are pretty heavy.
