sold a car to friend and let him borrow my plates with it.how do i cancel them so he will stop using them.

Contact the DMV and advise them. Then TELL him the DMV has cancelled them; and unless they are returned, next stop is to report them stolen.

Good intentions, but a real bad idea. Go to the DMV and cancel the plates. The only trouble is that if your friend gets into an accident, the car is still in your name and you are responsible. Until the car is in his name, you are merely renting the car to him or letting him borrow it.

I've found this out the hard way. Never again. I don't sign the title over until we are sitting in the county clerks office and then he pays the taxes on it, gets his plates and I get my money. Then the deal is done and everybody is happy. Now you know.

Depending on your state laws, you may have to surrender the plates to the DMV to cancel them.
