I often come across people talking in terms of levels, states of spiritual development, one at a higher level than another. Is spiritual development a process similar to material development where you have to work in a certain way to reach certain goals. Is there a similar formula to be followed to be spiritually elevated ?

There is no formula, no step by step procedure to spirituality.
Yes it is a development process but not material kind of a thing but self realisation.
The final Goal is self realisation where there is nothing but you and you face to face.
I may follow a path which may or may not suit you, so better find your own.

My own personal opinion is that finding one's spirituality and developing it is a journey- an on-going process. For some, it can be a "leap of faith," but for me, I first had to develop faith in myself- then faith in humanity, before I could develop faith in a higher power. Now that I have mastered those things, my journey continues. Now I must learn to give back to both society (mankind) and to my higher power, and share what I know with others...my journey has no final destination. It is one that will continue. I think that when a person develops their spirituality one step at a time, it makes the faith they develop from it much more solid... a "leap of faith" can be easily shaken. It lacks a firm foundation. Be wary of man-made organized religions...they all claim to have all the answers, and that "their way" is the "only way"...and most require that you make that initial "leap of faith"...I think that it's highly possible that organized religion may be what leads people off of the true path to finding their spirituality. What one needs for their journey is what is already written in your heart. Take in knowledge of religions, educate yourself...but listen to your heart. If something does not sound right, it isn't right. Being spiritual is not being judgemental or self-righteous, it does not mean excluding others who are different, or only reaching out a hand to those who worship the same way you do...be wary of churches who practice these things...most of them do. What divides us cannot be spiritual...true spirituality unites the souls, the spirits of mankind together.

Spiritual development is always step by step depending upon the intensity and attachment of devotee to deity. Regarding levels, there is no measure and comparison at all. The deity and devotees only know each other and no third party can assess or test or examine the level. Those who talk or tell are ignorant ones boasting on others.

For me and others with whom I've discussed it, there can be formulas like you list, but there are no particular formulas for everyone, and there are many ways spiritual growth happens. It is possible to target particular weaknesses like our tendency to impatience or injustice. And empowering others' spiritual growth accelerates the process even more. The spiritual physics of it do follow a pattern: the more you give away (empower others) , the more you have to keep on giving. Whatever we give to other comes back a hundred-fold to us. Stopping is going backwards.

Sometimes awareness of new insight/understanding/capacity is sudden, like a eureka moment; sometimes slowly over months or years. Sometimes it seems like there are levels, I'm thinking onion layers, to understanding, each more profound than the preceding one. As soon as you reach what you think is an understanding, you see that there are deeper aspects of which you were unaware before you reached this layer.

In this day and age, spiritual growth comes fastest to those who consciously seek it through applying spiritual principles in their daily interactions of true friendship and service to humanity. Interaction with others, especially those who are different from us culturally, educationally, religiously, economically challenge us and our preconceived ideas, and is what we need.

We need to use all our spiritual power to make our earth a better place and to make peace and prosperity for all humanity a reality. If we aren't using it for that, we are wasting it and probably don't deserve it.

I like what Tera says.

Spiritual development is a step-by-step process. There are eight steps to climb on the spiritual ladder before you reach the last limit.

It is usually a step by step, line upon line approach and method that works for us It is possible however to make a jump though not too many of us can do that. Watch anyone learn something new; with most people it takes time to learn and accept new information and it takes even longer if they had incorrect information to begin with. Spiritual learning is no different, step by step, keep trying your best and you will get there.

It's the same as physical growth....constant and also spurty at the start. What you are doing as you "grow" spirituality is physically growing thought paths in your right brain lobe. It's sort of like adding RAM to a 'puter.

When you fully develop the right brain lobe, your empathy will be high also. That can also be a curse in this world we live in right now.

Unselfishness. thinking and doing stable previous your self, your loved ones and your pals, your faith, your united states, your species. it fairly is spirituality in prepare. it fairly is the only observable sign and mark of a spiritually turning out to be individual. Chanting some sacred words or holy texts and verses or believing in some or different course to God are mandatory, yet are secondary to the above. project is while human beings carry forth this secondary as popular element. Like we hear human beings asserting nonetheless a individual had lived all his existence with intense ethical values, if he does not have faith in my e book or my faith or my God, he will pass to hell etc. it fairly is unquestionably an abominable thinking. uncertain how some 'so stated as religious human beings' can carry directly to such perspectives.
