Outside of the Christian 'argument' that all other religious ideas are false, why is it so acceptable to Christians that there is an everlasting concept of life after death (either eternity in hell or the giving of a new body upon entrance to heaven), yet it is claimed by the very same people that rebirth or reincarnation (which are not the same concept) is false, impossible, ludicrous, etc?

Within all there is a disposal of a physical body, leaving over a soul, spirit, mind, etc. which then continues on in some form or another...

Also, if you consider Buddhist rebirth to be simply the soul being reborn into a new body and starting over, please read/leard about it before answering.

Hi MarkS,

Most Christians here answers what the book says. Others spiced it with their own subjective interpretation. In my observation, when Christian answers they put their faith entirely to their book. They usually lack meditative quality the way spiritual being answers questions.

From where I stand, the Christians talk about the ultimate destiny of men while Buddhist about the processes how to get there. There are gaps though but in general their teachings are compatible. Sometimes it is the use of words that creates misunderstanding(e.g. Christians for soul and Buddhist for ego, Buddha Nature and Holy Spirit, Nirvana and Heaven).

Of course, this is just my personal understanding.

Its not in their Bible.

Although, actually, if you look carefully, you will see it mentioned in a couple of places...

Jewish priests were sent to ask John the Baptist, "Art thou Elijah?" (John, 1:21)

Christ said of John the Baptist "this is Elijah." (Matthew 11:14.)

Matthew 17:11–13
11. "He replied, ‘Elijah is indeed coming and will restore all things;
12. but I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but they did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man is about to suffer at their hands.’
13. Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them about John the Baptist."

So, apparently, Jesus believed in some form of reincarnation, even though his supposed followers don't.

It all rests on the validity of the target holy book--doesn't it?
The Bible is the only book where the Author actually challenges the reader to prove that what is written therein is was written from the point-of-view of the eternal. That the actual Author knows the end from the beginning and proves it.

And what was resurrection if not a kind of rebirth.albeit in the same body[minor modification]?Contradiction or not, does such debates help human beings in any constructive way,as of now?It is better to leave such issues to the clerics, who are trained and paid for debating, demeaning concepts/faiths other than their own and leading their lives in meaning less existence.

reincarnation cause Jesus said that John the baptist was Elias in his previous life or Elias was John the baptist in previous life and if you Christians believe Jesus is coming back then you might well say he is reincarnating. I am Hindu and it is because you are reincarnated cause of your Karma if you do terrible things in this life the most possibility is you are born as a bug or animal and if you do good things you are born as human

Before the council of Nicea in the 300's a good many Christians did in fact believe and preach reincarnation.
