I agree with the trifle idea, but a really easy way to do it. Buy a pound cake from the store. Some fresh fruit and whipped cream. That is all it takes!!! Cut cake into cubes, put in bottom of large glass bowl, then add whipped cream, if you want, you can flavor the whipped cream with some strawberry juice, some vanilla whatever you like. Mascerate the fruit with just a little sugar, this will produce some liquid, Add the fruit after the whipped topping. Keep on layering till you have a couple layers of each ingredient. Trifle are easy, they can be made with pre-purchased cakes or brownies. You can use any kind of fruit. Peaches, nectarines, berries. Again, just add a little sugar to the fruit to make a liquid. Then the ever popular cool whip. You can of course make fresh whipped cream. And again here you can vary the flavor of that cream. Be creative, but if you want to stick to red, white and blue, use strawberries and blueberries for the fruit.

have fun and good luck.

Why not bring a bucket of ice cream and cones. It'll be hot,and everyone loves icecream. Or get big store made cookies and make cream sandwiches...... or this
Not Yo' Mama's Banana Puddin - Paula Deen
2 bags Pepperidge Farm Chessmen cookies
6 to 8 bananas, sliced
2 cups milk
1 (5-ounce) box instant French vanilla pudding
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
1 (14-ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12-ounce) container frozen whipped topping thawed, or equal amount sweetened whipped cream

Line the bottom of a 13 by 9 by 2-inch dish with 1 bag of cookies and layer bananas on top.
In a bowl, combine the milk and pudding mix and blend well using a handheld electric mixer. Using another bowl, combine the cream cheese and condensed milk together and mix until smooth. Fold the whipped topping into the cream cheese mixture. Add the cream cheese mixture to the pudding mixture and stir until well blended. Pour the mixture over the cookies and bananas and cover with the remaining cookies. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Instead of the Chessman cookies you could use the standard Nilla Wafers.

you have some good ideas to choose from, but here is a festive idea.

Red, White and Blue Ambrosia
INGREDIENTS
1 pint heavy cream
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
2 cups sour cream
1 1/2 cups flaked coconut
1 (20 ounce) can crushed pineapple, drained
1 pint strawberries, hulled and sliced
1 pint fresh blueberries
3 cups miniature marshmallows
DIRECTIONS
Combine the heavy cream and confectioners' sugar in a large bowl. Whip with an electric mixer until thick but not grainy. Mix in sour cream.
Use a rubber spatula to fold in the flaked coconut, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries and marshmallows until everything is evenly distributed. Cover and chill for at least 4 hours before serving. It tastes best if chilled overnight.

I know that it's a day late to suggest a recipe but i guess if you like this recipe you can do it next year:

Flag Cake:

18 tablespoons (2 1/4 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature
3 cups sugar
6 extra-large eggs at room temperature
1 cup sour cream at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
3 cups flour
1/3 cup cornstarch
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
For the icing:
1 pound (4 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature
1 1/2 pounds cream cheese at room temperature
1 pound confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
To assemble:
2 half-pints blueberries
3 half-pints raspberries

Heat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Butter and flour an 18 by 13 by 1 1/2-inch sheet pan.

Cream the butter and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on high speed, until light and fluffy. On medium speed, add the eggs, 2 at a time, then add the sour cream and vanilla. Scrape down the sides and stir until smooth.

Sift together the flour, cornstarch, salt, and baking soda in a bowl. With the mixer on low speed, add the flour mixture to the butter mixture until just combined. Pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the top with a spatula. Bake in the center of the oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool to room temperature.

For the icing, combine the butter, cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mixing just until smooth.

Spread three-fourths of the icing on the top of the cooled sheet cake. Outline the flag on the top of the cake with a toothpick. Fill the upper left corner with blueberries. Place 2 rows of raspberries across the top of the cake like a red stripe. Put the remaining icing in a pastry bag fitted with a star tip and pipe two rows of white stripes below the raspberries. Alternate rows of raspberries and icing until the flag is completed. Pipe stars on top of the blueberries.

I serve this cake right in the pan. If you want to turn it out onto a board before frosting, use parchment paper when you grease and flour the pan.

... or to make it easier, you can use a boxed cake mix instead of making it out of scratch :]

This one is super easy and super good -- especially for a hot day.

Angel Lush

Prep Time: 15 min
Total Time: 1 hr 15 min
Makes: 10 servings

1 can (20 oz.) crushed pineapple in juice, undrained
1 pkg. (4-serving size) JELL-O Vanilla Flavor Fat Free Sugar Free Instant Reduced Calorie Pudding & Pie Filling
1 cup thawed COOL WHIP LITE Whipped Topping
1 pkg. (10 oz.) round angel food cake
10 fresh strawberries

MIX pineapple with its juice and the dry pudding mix in medium bowl. Gently stir in whipped topping.
CUT cake horizontally into three layers. Place bottom cake layer, cut-side up, on serving plate; top with 1-1/3 cups of the pudding mixture. Cover with middle cake layer and an additional 1 cup of the remaining pudding mixture. Top with remaining cake layer; spread top of dessert with the remaining pudding mixture.
REFRIGERATE at least 1 hour. Top with strawberries just before serving. Store leftover dessert in refrigerator.

When I made it I used regular pudding and regular Cool-Whip instead of the low fat/low sugar versions -- and I used both Strawberries and Blueberries for garnish.

How about leaving the baking aside and making a fruit trifle, always a winner with my in-laws, one of those birds eye boxes but DO NOT use the jelly crystals (they are crap!!) buy a seperate box of the hartleys jelly cubes and only use 3/4 of hot water. Add a tin on del montes fruit cocktail to the jelly before you put it in the fridge to cool. You can even decorate the top with a cruched flake/smarties etc! Have fun!

Take half the tub of whipped cream, mix that with the milk and pudding mixes. Mix till creamy. Pour into the crust. Chill for 2 hrs in fridge. Use the rest of the whipped cream to top off the pie. Twist off oreo tops and put 8 of them on top...one per piece when cutting it.
