One of my favorite time-savers has turned out to be heavy use of that "format painter"! I make a newsletter, which involves lots of variation in fonts for the various sections, headers, footers, author lines, etc., so I use the painter alot!
Another trick I often use is, when I'm having trouble getting the margins JUST RIGHT on a heavily indented paragraph, just either (a) create a table, with one of the columns empty, or (b) go into two-column mode for the duration of the problem indent.
On mail merge into a couple of Avery labels templates (notably, 5160), to get the label information NOT to jam up against the left side of a label, it may help to insert a space at the beginning of each line.
