this was a first time offense in nassau county and im from nyc. also, when the officer handed me the ticket, he told me to plead not guilty and mail it in..why did he say that?!?!

You can ask the judge for Defensive Driving course
No idea why the officer may have said what he did

First time... it's likely that you can get a fine reduction or dismissal. Depends on the judge.

However... if you simply mail back the ticket and plead not-guilty, then:

(1) If you did it, then a "not-guilty" plea is not appropriate. It's a lie. What you are is "guilty" but deserve consideration. Which means that you have the right to go to court.

(2) However, if Nassau County has a busy backlog, they might dismiss rather than wasting court time.

(3) However, they also might have strict sense of safety (perhaps for political reasons) and therefore want to ensure that everyone that commits a traffic offense gets punished. Some judges are this way.

Anyway... if you want to take the chance... mail it back and ask for a court date. When you go to court, admit to doing it, say that it was a mistake, this was your first time, and you'll never do it again. Hope for a lenient judge.
