Over the last 8 or 9 months I have been gaining a little more weight than I ever have before. At about the same time my cycle got a little messed up too. I went to see my doctor and my thyroid screening came back abnormal. I have read that having thyroid problems can slow down and almost shut off a body's metabolism, so I'm thinking this would explain my recent weight problems and inability to lost the weight. I was wondering if anyone who has a thyroid problem but is on medication has had similar weight issues and after the medication was able to lose the weight? how quickly did your body's metabolism bounce back after medication? I'm not too worried about my weight and am just happy to know what is wrong with me. I was just curious if anyone has any personal experience on thyroid medication and weight loss.

Well I have hypothyroidism and i is not fun (just being honest). I gained about 25 lbs in 6 weeks when I was first diagonosed. I thought you simply take a pill each day and then you are fine. Let me start by saying after being involved with many various thyroid groups, each body responds different to medication and this disease. Mine not so well. The best med for me has been Armour, some docs wont prescribe it. I was on synthroid but always felt so tired (still do though). For many with this disease the weight issue will never be gone and it will be an uphill battle for the rest of our lives, moreso than an avergae person without this disease. Hair loss-thinning hair, dry skin, brittle nails all still play a role in my daily battle. My biggest complaint would be the weight. Read as much as you can about this disease, look for support groups, it can be very helpful. People who do not have this disease will never understand what you are going through. I wish you the very best and here are a couple websites for you to check out. See below.

Yes - losing weight is possible but it is not easy. A healthy person can drop the weight in days by dieting - it takes me a month to lose 2-3 LB. Once I was on Armour Thyroid I felt much better than on Synthroid kind of meds. Hypothyroid people will gain weight most of the time which will be a challange to drop. It is hard to cut your portions when you are constatnly hungry and never eat as much as it can satisfy you. After exercising, watching what you eat and your portions, getting plenty of sleep, vitamins and minerals and correct dose of medicine (the one that works for you) will help you to lose weight but it will not happen without work you put into it! Good luck! (ps: in 1.5 yrs on Armour I lost 20 LB)

My thyroid was removed surgically about 30 years ago. I have to take meds daily for the rest of my life. Because the reason was a form of cancer I have to go in every few years and get checked. They do a full body scan which requires I go off my meds for almost a month each time. The result is that I gain about 10 pounds and feel like hell by time I get scanned. Within a couple months of resuming my meds I lose the weight and feel fine again.

You didn't explain whether or not you may have hypothyroidism (underfunction of the thyroid gland) or hyperthyroidism (over role). Likely you may have hypothyroidism. You will have to seek advice together with your medical professional for the solutions to this query. Likely the healing of stages to ordinary will enable your interval to come to be extra ordinary. Your weight might difference, however this isn't a intent to make use of the thyroid tablet and most probably it won't difference in any respect. Hope this is helping.

My little brother has a thyroid problem, he has been on his tablets for about 6 months now and has lost about half a stone just through his tablets, you should find it should start to drop off within a few weeks though, it does depend on how you keep your diet though.

Yes, hypothyroid patients tend to gain weight, which will get corrected with thyroxine supplements and exercise etc. Similarly, hyperthyroid patients gain weight which they lost when treated with medicine, surgery or radioactive iodine.
