Your wedding and engagment ring should be something you love. platinum is expensive. I like white gold. I love things that are different, and I like bezel settings that protect the stones so they don't catch on things rather than prong settings - also they don't require such frequent maintanence - something like this - http://www.robbinsbros.com/productsearch/productDetail.asp?prod_id=21288&pType=ring&intIsJewelry=0&set_shape=1013

Don't worry about what's popular these days. Taking a close look at a couple jewelry counters should give you an idea of what most people are looking for, if that's important to you.
Look at the rings and see what consistantly draws your eye. Is it large or small? Single stone or cluster? Square cut or round? Is it a diamond at all?
If you're looking for silver tone, I frankly wouldn't worry about getting platinum. The big deal is it's supposed to last longer. My sterling silver engagement ring is still going strong more than seventeen years later and my mother's sterling silver wedding ring outlived her (some thirty years of marriage) and has graced my hand for the last fourteen years without any significant outward sign of wear. A couple tiny scratches is all that a close examination will turn up on either ring, and I use my hands a lot and am always slamming a hand into something.
If the ring you love is platinum and your guy can afford it, that's great...but white gold is plenty sturdy, and there are other options that will also last a lifetime.
The most important thing is that you choose something you will love wearing. Find your ring, not someone else's.
And remember, if you don't want to wear a ring at all...you really don't have to...says the lady whose hands are nearly covered in rings. It's really a personal choice, so you should do what makes you happy.
Don't worry so much about what others have chosen. That was them. This is one of those rare things in life that really is All About You. Enjoy it!

platinum is a much better metal than white gold. White gold is basically yellow gold with another metal on top (rhodium plating) which gives it the white look. This does come off eventually, some faster than others, and can be put back on, with a cost. Platinum is a harder metal and is naturally white. it really depends how much money you're going to spend on the ring, as platinum is more expensive.
Princess cut is quite popular at the moment, but round brilliant gives off more of a sparkle

I found out that what I had in mind looked wretched on my finger so that was a big surprise for me. Initially I was looking at 3 stone princess cut diamonds but they were too big and akward looking on me. I ended up loving the look of a round solitaire and I chose white gold because it just seemed more financially practical and easier to add to in the future. Also I wanted a wedding band to match and refused to let my man pay for a platinum wedding band because the expense was outrageous. So for ME, it was finding a ring that looked good on my weird little hand (haha!) and that I felt comfortable letting my guy spend money on.
Try them on and let him know what you like best. I don't wear much jewelry either so I wasn't sure what I was looking for. All I knew was what I saw in magazines and on other people and I came to find out that like most other things, just because something is trendy doesn't mean it's flattering.
Good luck and have fun!!!

In response more to an above answer, white gold is not always yellow gold under a type of plating. In fact, white gold, true white gold, is mixed WITH another metal, to give it a white look.
Platinum is stronger and can be harder to resize, if the sizing change is very large. The higher the karat of gold the softer it is, which is also another consideration. My boyfriend is a mechanic and would chip and bend a gold ring, if it was 18k-24k. So we plan on platinum, for our rings, to resist damage while he works.

Platinum is just about the hardiest metal out there when it comes to rings. White gold is softer and will tend to scratch more, but looks just as good and is usually less expensive. I prefer the princess cut for the diamonds. A simple solitaire princess cut. Simple, yet timeless. My suggestion is to go try some on, you'll find out what you like! Good luck!

I personally love the white gold rings, and the princess cut diamonds, but i don't like solitaire diamonds, I like the three diamond settings, or the inlaid diamond band...just to go several different jewelry stores, try some on, talk to the salespeople, they're usually very eager to help you look at different things.

Do some research on the Internet and also by looking in jewelry stores to see what's out there, how much they cost, and to get an idea of your tastes. You can also buy a book about purchasing a diamond ring. Make sure you know about them so that you make the best decision and purchase for the money.

No one but the jewler can tell the differnce between white gold and platnuim, go for the cheaper one. Princess cuts are in and you can get wraps for your ring too. Mine is princess cut with a sapphire wrap. Pick out what you like, then look at the cost. If it is over what you wanted to pay, then you have to decied if you really want it that bad. And remember, it is just a ring.

I never wore jewelry either until I was engaged. I originally liked the 3 stone rings, but then I decided I wanted the "traditional" engagement ring and told my fiance I wanted a solitaire diamond. I told him about liking princess cut diamonds and white gold and he went from there. My ring is so beautiful, I LOVE it! Platinum is nice, but my fiance told me they can't resize it as easily as white gold, dunno if thats true or not.
