because a lot of times, he just doesn't have a clue. he can be really rude and disrespectful and immature and childish, and just clueless. he annoys everyone around him. i told him this (not in a mean way, but respectfully) and he was a little upset, but admitted he wanted to fix that and change.

how can i help him change to be more respectful, mature, manly, and polite? are there any books out there?

You don't say how old he is, maturity comes with age/experience/trial and error as well as anything else. He may be that way because of the way he was raised and for lack of a positive role model and coping skills for certain situations. If he does not like his own behavior and wants to change that is a good sign, but sometimes ones nature is hard to change no matter how hard one tries, especially as one gets older.

Guys typically don't like to be "fixed," you will have far better results if he does so voluntarily. Instead of you picking a book for him (he might not like the title or authors style and take it the wrong way) it might be a fun thing to go to a book store and dig through some self help books together, give him some choice in the matter. If he tells you to go pick the book, he can't complain later for not participating.

While you're at the book store together you may find out you have previously unknown interests in common and exploring those as well only strengthens ones relationship.

Uh, lady, give it up. There is no way you are going to change him. That has to be the biggest fault we women have--thinking that we can change men! DUMP HIM! Find someone else who IS more mature and respectful of others!

Respect and courtesy are learned early in life or not at all. Maturity may come with time, but if you want to be with a man, it's time to ditch the boy.

IF he does want to change he will try.

If he keeps doing what he is doing he's just saying that to placate you.

Point out immediately when he acts that way. No matter where you are or what you are doing. That way he can apologize if its to a stranger.

"Manly"? Without knowing just what you mean by that, I can't be sure what to recommend, other than the standard Post/Baldridge/Vanderbilt etiquette books.

So you're assuming that he'll read this book? Or would you be reading it to him? Either way, what a hoot!

Peter Post's etiquette for men.

The fact that you let him bang it already shows him he's got what you want.
