I put gas cap in car while pumping gas and it didn't stop on its own, spilling $18 of gas, REIMBURSED?

I was pumping gas...I ALWAYS put my gas cap in the pump so I can go inside the store and the gas continues to pump...

well yesterday, the pump DIDN'T stop and there was a HUGE gas spill (about 6 gallons worth -$18 -spilled on the ground).

I feel that it was a malfunction at the pump, and that I should be reimbursed the $18 worth ... how do I go about getting this?

Now this guy at the pump next to me was YELLING at me telling me what I did was a crime and they would have to call the hazmat team. I told him I do this all the time...the gas station attendent told me to leave.

Did I do something wrong???

I feel that I should be REIMBURSED $18 and then some other form of reimbursement for the embarrasement and humiliation the guy next to me tried to inflict on me... talk about a lack of manners!

I think it's against the law to leave the pump unattended while fueling. You shouldn't be reimbursed because what you do is very dangerous, imagine if that 6 gallons touched a spark. Don't leave the pump.

Oh and the guy wasn't rude at all. From his perspective, you were an idiot, no offense.

Well, for this question, I have to agree with most of the people here who gave you the answer.

(1) There are no gas attendants attending to every station, so that you shouldn't have left the pump.

(2) Secondly, don't push the issue, because you might end up losing this case then you would win by just walking away with a lesson learned.

Sorry, but I agree with most of the comments here. The first question I would side with you all the way as the gas station was not properly maintained.

If you had to lodge your gas cap in the pump then it's obvious that it's something you shouldn't be doing. As for reimbursement - what if you blew the place up? Are you willing to reimburse the owner of the station, the families of the people you killed, the environmental clean up, etc...? Be thankful that your ignorance and lack of consideration for others only cost you $18.00 and some embarrassment!

So the guy was kind of rude, yeah, but he was probably freaking out and here's why: if someone else had walked by without noticing and attempted to put their still steaming cigarette butt in the garbage can, but missed and hit the ground close enough to the spill, POOF! you and everyone close enough to you would be dead right now.

As others said, you are not supposed to leave the pump unattended at self-serve stations (which is almost all of them these days). The $18 is not as important as your life!

If you look around the next time you're at a gas station pump, you'll see signs nearly everywhere saying not to leave pumps unattended. It is actually against the law and you should stop doing it immediately. I don't know the exact conversation with the guy next to you, but it sounds like he was right. He may have embarrassed you, but hopefully you learned a lesson and will accept it, then move on.

LOL u shoudl be reiumbursed???? no try you should have paid for the loss of gas bc u negligently walked away. thats like when u walk down the aisle and break a glass bottle. why should the store reimburse u when u damaged their merchandise. u couldve caused a serious fire/accident. do not look to pass blame on someone else. talk responsbility for ur own negligence. avoid making a big deal bc u are clearly in the wrong.

You are wrong to leave your car unattended, and the worst thing is that even after this spill you *still* don't realize what a dangerous thing it is to do. Spilled gas evaporates, gas fumes are highly flammable. The guy may've been yelling but he likely had a scare from all that spilled gas and the hazard it caused. *his* reaction is very understandable!

I wouldn't push it, I am not sure about how liable you might be but a hazmat cleanup of that gas could easily cost more than a thousand dollars. I would find out first if the station actually had it cleaned up or just let it evaporate.

Your so Hot...there is no need to do anything but smile and say...oooppppssss!

Well, okay, your hot...but in reality...you have a responsibility to your actions. The pump should have shut off...they are required too. So there was indeed a malfunction.

You should probably be reimbursed.

But at the same time...you have too monitor your actions. If your action by putting he gas cap in the pump impaired the ability of the pump to disengage...you are responsible.

But your hot...so the guy had no reason to yell...he is obviously gay.

Best Regards.
