I can't imagine why you couldn't. You are the registered owner, but the car will be insured based on the primary driver, your son, the car itself, and your son's address (where the car is parked at night).

I would go online and get a few quotes.

Often, you need insurance in the state where the car is registered. You are allowed to register a car in a state other than where you live, as long as that's where the car is.

If your son has the call full-time (at least during the school year) in California, you should register it there. You can then get insurance there. A national insurance company, like GEICO, should make it easy for you. Finding a local agent in CA when you're in FL can be harder.

Depending on the insurance company, your son can get insurance on the car even though it is under your name. Some insurance companies do not allow this though so you might have to shop around. I own a truck that I purchased from my father in law... since there was a lien holder and I did not want to go through refinancing, we have left it in his name. A few insurance companies would not insure the vehicle unless it was in my name.... Farmer's Insurance had no problem and I have had full coverage on the truck for three years now.

Since the car is registered and used in CA, you'll need a CA insurance policy on it. If you are insured by a national insurance company they should be able to add that to your current policy without any trouble. If your current insurer won't or can't do that you'll either need to switch to another insurance company that can handle that, or your son will need to get insurance on his own in CA.

I was in exactly the same situation a few years ago, with one car in MO and one in OK driven by my son. My insurance company issued state insurance cards in both states, one in MO for the car I drove and one in OK for the one that my son drove.

call your insurance company. they will tell you if they need to add coverage specific to ca to the policy. different states have different coverage requirements, so they may. my mom was a cosigner on my car, she lived in ky and i lived in tx, so they said they had to write a policy for both states and sent me two sets of insurance cards. it didn't cost any extra though.
