It sounds as if you've been through alot to try and make your dog comfortable and do what you can for her; which can make it even harder when it comes to the point when you realize that keeping her alive is causing her to suffer past the point where it is humane.

You're losing your best friend, and this can be hard.

When you are ready, consider adopting another friend from the humane society or the pound. You are not replacing your friend, but making a new one; saving a life, and getting a chance to ease your grief by caring for an animal who might not survive very long without your friendship. (many shelters kill these dogs and cats after 3-7 days)

And take comfort in knowing that you had a wonderful friendship, and that your friend loved you very much, and that sometimes it is really in the best interest of your friend to not suffer anymore.

It's a hard choice, but it's much harder to see your best friend suffer slowly with no chance to recover.

As for which dog to get? Trust your gut when you go to the pound; don't have any expectations and don't be afraid to ask for advice from the staff when you find one you are connecting with to make sure that the two of you will be happy together!

Good Luck!

Why, is she very old also and has medical/ other health problems? I have had a blind dog before and she lived to 15 or 16.

If the only reason is because she is blind, she does not need to be put to sleep. Blind dogs cope just fine. This site will help you with how to care for a blind dog.

No. My dog went blind when he was 10, then went partially deaf at 12.... got bad arthritis at 15... but still liked to take a walk and wag his tail.... We didn't put him to sleep until he was 17 (!!!)... and only because he stopped wagging his tail, so I felt he was in too much pain...

Dogs are not humans, nor do they process sensory information the same way we do. Dogs do not revel in the things they see; they revel in the things they smell. In the wild, sight is important only for pursuing pray and escaping predators. In a domestic dog, sight falls to the #3 spot in sensory importance, after smell and hearing. Put another way, a domestic dog losing her sense of sight is like you losing your sense of smell (smell, in humans, falls after sight and hearing).

Blindness in a dog is not in itself a health issue; it does not cause her any pain, and she has lost none of her ability to give comfort and love or to enjoy a long, full life.

I've included a couple of links to tips on training and caring for dogs with visual impairment. Please read these before you make any final decision.

Blindness is not a reason to be put to sleep. Is something more serious going on with her?

You don't have to put her to sleep because she is blind. I had a dog that went blind, she will adapt.

first honor your dog by planting a tree or framing a photo
you know you loved your dog, she knows you love her
so after that i would get antoher dog, not to replace her!!!! but to save one at the humane shealter plus dogs can help you move on not to forget but remember the good times

Well would u rather have ur dog suffer and keep it alive or would u have it go in peace. Its not like they torture the dog to death, the dog goes in peace and goes quietly. Would u want to keep living your life not being able to see anything. I dont think I would.
