read and study the Bible continuously
be open to conviction of the Holy Spirit in what you might need to repent of
know that we all have faults and will continue to stumble, but that doesn't change our salvation
1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"

Anyone, believer or not, has a lot of faults (sins) in them. God knows that. That is the very reason that He sent Jesus to be the propitiation for those sins. You don't need to get right to a certain extent before you are "good enough" to receive Jesus. You'll never get there.
You just need to admit to Him that you are a sinner and that you need Him to be Lord and Savior of your life. Do that, and mean it, and you will be the genuine article.
If you do this, how can you tell if it "takes"? Always ask the Lord to guide your decisions and take hold of your thoughts. When you sin, come to Jesus in prayer, repent of that sin and He will cover it in His blood, as if it was no more.

ALL genuine Christians have a lot of faults. Just accept Jesus and ask Him to forgive you, help you, and go on doing the best you can.

Accept your faults, it's part of being human. Try and grasp what it truly means to live a Christian life aside from legalism and go out and love people. That's as genuine as you can get.

The definition of the word Christian is 'follower of Christ'. Christ never told his followers to be perfect or fault-free, so read the Bible and follow Christ's teachings as best you can. If you have a difficult time following His words, pray to him for guidance. And when you're ready, share God's love with everyone you meet. May the peace of our Lord be with you.

Good. That's what being "a genuine Christian" is all about. Recognizing that you have faults...and letting God the Holy Spirit work on them!
If you are Baptized, you are "genuine". That's God's doing - and nothing you could have ever done for yourself.

Turn from the direction/way your going and do what it says in the Bible, Do what Jesus did. Read the New Testament. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you, reveal truth to you and to turn to do it. All of us have done the same thing and are in the process of becoming mature in Christ Jesus.
to Turn to God is to 'repent' which means to have a new mind, His mind, not of the world but of the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth...which Jesus lived out here for us to do the same.
It works, God's word is so very true, don't give up {-;

Welcome to the club. John said clearly in his first epistle, "If we say that we have not sinned, we make God a liar, and His word is not in us."
We all fall short, so just be honest with God. He knows that we are just dust (Psalm 103:14), and if you have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, He does not see our faults--He sees only Jesus. Remember, when you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, you become a child of God. I have two children, and believe me, they have many faults. However, such faults do not make them any less my children. But one thing that gives me joy (over any of their short-comings) is that they are honest with me. They always fess-up when their poor behavior gets the best of them.
Remember what Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3:11-15...
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
Basically, what Paul was saying, is that when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, that becomes our firm foundation. We are founded on the Rock and nothing we do can move or destroy it. We are saved without the requirements of good works. Now, upon this foundation we build with our deeds and attitudes--whether good or bad. When the day comes when we meet Him face to face, everything that we did in the flesh will be consumed by His judgment--and such will suffer loss. However, everything that we do in the Spirit, we will receive reward. However, one must always remember that neither works of the flesh, nor works of the spirit have nothing to do with our foundation--ie our salvation through Christ.

To be a Christian is to strive to be like Jesus Christ. None of us are 100%. we're only human, we all have faults, and God knows and accepts this. I believe that what He wants is for us to try our absolute best to be Christ-like in our hearts and actions in public and even behind closed doors, and when we fall, to get back up, even if we fall alot. Life sometimes throws us curveballs, and I know that for me, I have to constantly say to myself, What Would Jesus Do? to make sure my reaction is Christ-like .

The fact that you realize your faults is a huge step. You will never be faultless but you can become a better person. I actively try to be better to other people , try putting yourselves in other peoples shoes no matter what situation they are in. This has helped me to become more of the person I want to be.
