Recently my aunt has moved in with my family and my two dogs (pitbull mix and a chow chow mix) have not warmed to her. The chow chow mix will not stop barking and the pitbull mix is not allowed to go near her because every time she does she starts to bark and lung at my aunt. I know they are protecting their territory and it takes time for them to get used to new people. Is there anything that can be done to help them calm down and accept the new addition to our family?

For your Aunt...

No eye contact with the dogs.
Slightly slouch the shoulders
No reaching out to the dogs
ACT ALOOF - (the best thing she can do).
She will not try to make friends with them until they approach her first.

She could toss them a treat of liver and as soon as she does she should do any or all of the above actions. Toss the treat in their directions and then ignore them= silence from everyone please.

It is worth a try. This is one of my approaches to dogs I will kennel sit with ... I also will whisper if they bark at me.. the dogs will stop barking to hear me... (smiles) AND I never reach my hand out to them...

Plus they love singing so if your Aunt could sing or hum very quietly without looking at the dogs ?? Subtle ways to show the dogs she is no threat to them or anyone in the household.

Good Luck

Your Aunt is quite brave to be in a home with not one but two dogs that are not pleased to have a house guest.

Give your Aunt some dog treats and let her feed the dogs. Also let her be the one to give them their food.

They don't bite the hand that feeds and once they see that she is not a threat or a stranger, and that she will be feeding them, they will warm up to her quickly.

She could also participate in the walking of these dogs, that would send a signal that she is their buddy!

When I went to my grandma's house, it was the same situation (except I didn't move in and it was a Chihuahua). So I went over there and her crazy dog wouldn't stop barking at me! It was sooo annoying. So I fed it a little slice of food and now it loves me. Everytime it will come over wagging its tail and begging for more. It's so cute!!!
Recommendation: Don't feed him a lot, haha =P

Hope it helps!

Let your aunt to give your dogs the food or the treat.
they will start to get an idea that your aunt will only give them food. after a week or so, the dogs will get along with your aunt.
Why would they hurt someone that gives them food?
good luck!

Dogs don't know people by seeing them they know by smell. You have to say your aunt that move her hand like by the dog nose and let your dog to smell her.
