You won't know they are there unless something bad happens.

You are blowing this terrorist threat out of proportion. There has been one succesfull incident where terrorists have hijacked a plane, and that was 6 years ago. 60 Million people travel through Heathrow every year. Less than 5000 people died on 911, what do you think your chances are?
Also he sounds a bit xenophobic to view people who are not like him as a threat. He, like many peolpe needs to stop being so afraid. Remember the cold war, when all you had to be worried about was the entire planet being destroyed by nuclear holocaust, don't you think you are actually slightly safer now?
Neo-conservative thinking is based on the assumption that a common goal is necessary to unite society. Following the cold war, and the collapse of Communist Russia, first the US government seized on the 'War on Drugs', as providing a common threat to unite their society. The war on drugs was not enough, but the 'War on Terror' or the 'Long war' has been far more effective. The neo-con government now once again depicts itself as being a protector from an external threat, and by exaggerating the severity of that threat is able to reinforce the belief that you actually need protection from something.
Also American Airlines are fine, I have had good flights on them, although the food is not great and the check-in procedure in the States is frustrating. OK, they are pretty mediocre really, but cheap.

Being that the flight is between the US and the UK, twopopular terrorist attack cities, there should be air marshals on the plane, at least 95% sure of that. Even if there was one though, YOU WILL NEVER KNOW unless a terrorist does try to take over the plane cos they are as undercover as possible, dress like passengers, and act like passengers, and conceal their weapons so that they wont arouse any suspicions to any potential hijacker is there is any and so they can 'take out' a hijacker without suspecting that the individual is a marshall

AA are dire, I would never fly with them, due to comfort and service let alone anything else. Pay the extra and go with BA if you can. AA have marshalls on some flights but Im not sure if they are on all.
If he is nervous, he will be nervous at every little thing. I cant understand why people fly if they are that scared. I understand how he feels if he sees Arab looking types as they scare the hell out of me and Im not nervous about flying!

contrary to popular belief Air Marshalls are on many flights. Some airlines just don;t make it common knowledge. After 9/11 I would expect AA to have Marshalls.
Hope you have a good holiday.
Annie M......even people who are scared of flying will fly simply because they have to do so....to get to Australia it is essential to fly...taking a boat would take weeks. And you say you don;t understand why some scared people fly......

Yes there are Air Marshalls on this airline. In my experience, security at US airports is very poor. Nothing like security in the UK.

Yes they do.
It's a US Dept of homeland security regulation for US-transatlantic flights to carry sky marshals.
