Power perhaps?

GWB, current president, has said he's a born again and he believes in intelligent design. Look how he's bankrolled religious programs by increased funding to "faith-based" institutions. Then look at how the general health of national science programs have decreased under his administration. If there hasn't been a redistribution of power and funding at the federal level that has increased in favor of religion and at the expense of science then I'll eat my hat.

You are assuming that their are ulterior motives. In a democracy, ANYONE should have the right to seek political office. That means anyone regardless of their religious affiliation. To be suspicious of a candidate based upon his religious background seems prejudicial.
People have the right to run for office, and share their own views and biases on their individual platform.
