This will save you very little if any money at all. The best way to save money on heating/cooling is to have the windows replaced with new ones with insulated glass and Low E coating. If you can't afford to replace them thenjust make sure the windows are sealed up air tight all the way around and put dark curtains inside to block some of the heat of the sunlight.

I saved a bundle because even though I have replacement windows they still leak. what it does is cut down on the drafts and supplies another airbarrier. Cost me about $20-30 a year but more than pays for itself

You would be waiting your time. your best bet would be to caulk . or depending on how involved you want to get . pull the window trim off and fill all voids with spray foam . it'll coast more up front , but you'll make your money back . plus if it's in the budget add more insulation to your attic .
