I am 16. I have always been "skinny", but never very athletic. I don't play any sports, because I'm not skilled enough. This summer, I want to become athletically fit, and maybe start something like cross country next year (or more realistically, the year after that). I need to know what I should be doing, and how to do it. I figure that I should start running, but I am new to this, so I need your advice. That's my goal for this summer. And also, does running do anything to help with your abs, or will I have to use another method for that? I am going to go for a six-pack too. =D Thanks for any help.

If you are going to get physically fit, I would start with walking. It has less wear and tear on all your joints and muscles. Also this will give you time to see how fit you are already. Don't forget you are young and this should help. Start maybe 15 minutes a day walking. If this is no biggie, the next day do 30 minutes. Keep increasing until you see this is getting tough. When it does get tougher do this until it is easy and then keep increasing the time or start jogging or running. Also don't forget how important it is to stretch out first, especially if you are going to run and also to keep up a lot of water so you don't get dehydrated. You should also eat a good amount of protein. If you are vegan or vegetarian this can still be accomplished with beans or protein powders etc. As far as your abs go, if you work out in general you will increase lean muscle mass everywhere, but you could do some crunches and things of that nature to move it along faster. Finally I want to say to you that you said that I am not skilled enough. I don't think that is correct. You can do almost anything you set your mind to as long as you want it hard enough and work towards it. Have a great summer!

There are a ton of books in the library about different exercise regiments, and how they will help you achieve certain results. Libraries usually have videos too. Try an exercise routine on video. Try things out to see what fits you the best. Different people get different results! Good Luck!

When people run, they buid their endurance and use muscles in their body that they don't usually use. The only way to do better is to swim. If you don't live near an ocean or can't go to a pool, then running is the answer. Good luck!!

You could run, swim, and do sit-ups for that six pack.
