I agree, why not open some minds? The twelve disciples of Jesus never sent out into the world to scare the holy word into peoples hearts.
Personally, I don't ever feel like I have been forced or scared into believing in God. I simply opened my mind to the concepts and began that journey of faith for myself. I think humanity has a history of violence and as humans do, we try and justify our actions by any means. Christianity is the perfect banner to wave over overtly terrible actions since religion offers the belief that a higher power has a hand over your actions and destiny. God becomes the culprit, not the person.
Answering the call of God to believe is a choice for your whole life. I have chosen to live my life in accordance to my heavenly Father. When people try to force other people to believe by fear or intimidation, they themselves show their disbelief. God wants us willingly to submit to his teachings. If he didn't, why were we given free will?
And lastly, I don't think it is an insecurity to feel empowered by claiming that I have a friend that can't be seen, only felt. We are all empowered by something that gets us up in the morning and sends us through our day. Whether it be pride in your job/career, your spouse waiting for you at the end of the day, your best friends you see on the weekend; something drives you to continue from one day to the next. But as we all know, jobs come and go, relationships and friendships can go bad, things can change. It is quite beneficial to place your faith in something that is and has always been unchanging.

I can only guess what might anger a believer when he encounters an atheist who chooses to speak in favor of reason and logic, and my guess is that the believer must be feeling a threat of insecurity that has not been applied from without but rather buy his own internal doing.
I agree entirely with you on the question of open discussion and on the sharing of atheist opinions, of its trust in factual knowledge and known scientific truths, that these things, of themselves, are in fact non-threatening to others in any real way; and furthermore, I'll include the obvious, that a healthy exchange of ideas can be a positive step toward new growth on the part of the participants of such a discussion.... any of the participants, atheist or not.
"Opening minds," as you have dubbed it is certainly not a one way street, is it? There is every opportunity for any individual of a discussion to adopt a new set of thoughts out of such an exchange. That choice is always absolutely personal, isn't it; so in deed, where is the harm ... why the anger?
I certainly stand behind the idea of engaging and challenging non-atheists in fair and open discussions that have every potential to encourage his thoughtful and reasonable change of opinion. "Yes." Why not open some minds? After all, isn't a stimulus for a little internal self-searching a good thing, an what's a question for if not to cause truth seeking?

I don't get mad. Ultimately it's up to the person who gets "converted." If they chose to believe something differently than I do, what is there to get upset about? Why would I get upset at the person who influenced them?
I don't agree with you, but I respect your right to believe what you want to believe.
Although I must add, I do get a bit upset at atheists who only ever try to "convert" me. Mind you I only know one person who is actually like this, but it gets tiresome being told that you believe in a false god and have some great flaw in who you are as a person because of what you believe. I'm sure you can relate when Christians try to "convert" you. It gets old after awhile but as I said, most atheists just let me think how I want to think.

That is conversion. That is ACTIVE indoctrination, not PASSIVE indoctrination.
That makes Atheism a type of philosophy or religion or poltical body.
You hand out leaflets just like the Communists and Christians do.
Then you PRETEND to be different.
And YOUR way is the TRUTH.
Don't sound much different to me than a JW or Evangelsitic Christian!
Many would stop being hostile if you'd just ADMIT to the truth and not pretend like these things are "different" from what other do!
And what is the enlightenment you bring. There IS no GOD, there IS no hope of salvation, except by our own hands.
God helps those who help themselves, so we, too, have to work with our hands to make things better.
But some people want to have hope and to believe and all you guys do is go around trying to burst people's bubbles.
Expect people to be mad what you do that.

if you are not trying to convert people then no harm done
if ( like the other poster ) you are making it your aim to convert , then I do have a problem with that
people should believe what makes sense to them without being coerced by others
everyone should come to their own conclusion
giving input is fine , if left at that

It's the same reason why some atheist get mad when they think someone from a different belief is trying to convert them to whatever religion they practice.

"...believing in gods", "...open their minds" (Oh, really? And you are...who?), "...the journey to knowledge", "...don't focus on their insecurities" (And exactly what "insecurities" would they be?). "So why not open some minds?"
You're not assuming too much here, are you?
