Have you considered that English may not be their first language and that maybe they are trying to get it right?

Mind you, spell check would be quite a good learning tool I suppose - wouldn't it?

I agree with you. Sometimes there are people out there who are hurting and looking for help and get back nasty comments about their spelling with no reference to their question. We all need to be a bit more compassionate.

Additional: I agree with Archie about the spelling and grammar but this forum is not an English class, it's a place where people look for help. Correcting their spelling isn't helpful in this context.

I think some people enjoy pointing out other people failings. It makes them feel superior i guess. However it is a fact that in the 80's UK teaching methods changed and those that were unfortunate to go through early schooling at the beginning of this period have been proven to have worse spelling and grammar. Fortunately they realised that the teaching method didn't work and changed it back. Not so good for those that have struggled with spelling all their days.Perhaps those criticising may think twice and think maybe there is a reason for the persons poor grammar and spelling before judging! It also doesn't mean that we are lacking in intelligence..... it just means we cant spell very well.

Compassion aside, correct spelling and grammar are basic communication tools of western society. Generally a question from an ESL speaker is identified as such by the asker. I get very frustrated when questions come from people, predominately teens, who are still students or have completed school. It is a sad indictment upon some aspects of our English curriculum that students cannot express themselves adequately using standard English. Quite often the context of the question is lost or confused amongst the appalling lack of written communication skills.

No, this is not an english class, but using spelling and grammar correctly is an important skill that every person should know, and practise. It is a dying skill. I believe that some people get far too worked up over it, but if your going to take the time to ask a question, do it properly. People need to have an idea of the intelligence level of the person, who is seeking the opinions of strangers, so that they may form the best possible answer.

I agree. It is senseless to be picky. Sometimes the person indicates that they want to improve. Then it is helpful to point out what they may not know. Spell check does teach. Should they add a grammar check?

I agree 100%. Some of my friends on here are from foreign countries. I think its remarkable that they are on here, and at least attempting to communcate with us. We probably don't know their language very well either.

Some people get frustrated if they cannot understand what the question is asking.
