Some things are worth fighting for. Some are not. If it is indeed a public argument and if you feel that it's just not worth it, that's fine. Nothing is wrong with that nor does it make you less of a man. Yes, indeed it does take a certain amount of courage, after all the person you're arguing with could take a swing at the back of your head and you're gambling on the fact that he doesn't.
Sometimes you know you can't win the fight, and they are just trying to bait you (happened to me quite a bit when I was younger). What you have to do is decide what's more humiliating, getting pummelled or walking away and avoid a situation with parents, cops, administrators, etc. But that takes maturity that some people just don't have unfortunately.
Now there are some things that just deserve a beat down. For example, I'm not going to let someone get away with anything and everything, nor should anyone. I'm not talking about silly notions of pride or disrespect, but self-defense physically and mentally. Some bullies need to just be put in their place. Having someone spit in your kids food or lay their hands on them or someplace on your person is not acceptable. Sure, you can go and call the police, but they can't do anything about it. Plus, I would hope they would be too busy actually doing their job, not settling your disputes.

This could be a very smart and very brave move. Sometimes, it is better to just walk away.
Here are the lyrics to Sting's "Englishman In New York"
I don't drink coffee I take tea my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York
See me walking down Fifth Avenue
A walking cane here at my side
I take it everywhere I walk
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
If, "Manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
Modesty, propriety can lead to notoriety
You could end up as the only one
Gentleness, sobriety are rare in this society
At night a candle's brighter than the sun
Takes more than combat gear to make a man
Takes more than a license for a gun
Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can
A gentleman will walk but never run
If, "Manners maketh man" as someone said
Then he's the hero of the day
It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile
Be yourself no matter what they say
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
I'm an alien I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York

Many reasons could be there:
1. He doesn't like to continue in the public!
2.He feels that he cant convince you!
3.He has some other work, more important than this!
4. He felt that he is talking to a fool! (Don't mistake me!)
5. He wants something more light in the argument!
6. He wants something strong in the argument!
7.He is not clear about the subject of argument!
8. He wants support for his stand, which he feels wont come in the public!
9. He is not finding it peaceful!
10.He wants to restore peace!
Many more could be said. but they all could be a part of the above only. You better take care of the above when you land up in such trouble!

So, what is the alternative? Stay and argue with any and everyone you have a disagrement with all the time?? That's just not very smart. You willend up either dead or in prison eventually and as a black man, we don't need any more brothas locked up over stupid things like street arguments.

A man who doesn't want to make a spectacle of himself in public is the better man.

Sounds like a normal guy to me. The only people that ctually awant to have a large public argument on display are usually "look at me" egomaniacs

I'll say that he is a man that does not want to make a big scene and probably does not want to cause any problems. He's a smart guy. It's better to have one crazy person than two crazy people.

I think it shows maturity and dignity, there is a time and place for everything and things can be settled privately. Without causing upset to the other person or those around at the time.
