someone that not only completes you but makes you whole as a person. thinking about that person 24/7 and knowing that the person feels the same way about you. Being able to understand and love the person just the way they are and doing everything for that person.

Love isn't a single emotion, it's a meshing of two or more emotions of varying degrees which combined is love to the person feeling it. These emotions and the degree to which they are felt, as well as their importance, are specific to each individual and change from moment to moment as the person themselves changes. Each person changes as they experience more in life and gain more knowledge. This in turn alters their attitude and the importance they will place on certain things, whether they are conscious of their change of attitude or not. And who one loves is always a choice on their own part, as they are the ones who place what is important and to what degree it is felt for love to be for them, again whether or not they are conscious of it.

This is why how one thinks of love for themselves changes as time goes by, unless one lives a life of stagnation. This is why people will fall in and out of love with a person, because they and the other person tend to change, and the definition of love, the qualities that define it for an individual at any given moment, have changed and the other person might not have changed accordingly to now comply with those changes.

This is also why it's easy to fall in love with someone you don't or barely know, because you can perceive them to be the way you would want them to be in order for you to fall in love with them. When they don't meet your requirements for what love is to you any longer, then you either try to change them (or how you look at them) or you break it off with them.

And then there is the love that some people don't call love because in their eyes it isn't meaningful enough (puppy love) or because it is destructive or because they consider it to be infatuation. But it is love nonetheless if it meets the requirements for love that the individual feeling it has set in placed for it at that time. True love, if ever there really is such a thing, is not the only love that exists.

And this is why the way we've defined love and the way we perceive someone will determine our falling in love with them or not, and if we stay in love with them or not. Change either the definition you've given love at the time or the way you see a person, and then you alter your love for them.
