Doctors(at hospital) would say "You need surgery." or "You need operation"?

Which is right(or normal)?

Or are there any differences?

Either:
You need surgery, or
You need AN operation

I think 1 is more US and 2 is more UK.

Traditionally the difference between operation and surgery stems from the title and qualifications of the person performing the procedure--operation--from Latin operari--to work--applied to work on human organs--a surgical procedure that could be performed by a licensed medical doctor; however,a surgery was performed by a surgeon--a specialist in performing operations only.

"In the United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand surgeons are distinguished from physicians by being referred to as "Mister." This tradition has its origins in the 18th century, when surgeons were barber-surgeons and did not have a degree (or indeed any formal qualification), unlike physicians, who were doctors with a university medical degree."

An American would say "You need surgery"
A British doctor would say "You need an operation".
Both are correct and both are normal, but in American usage surgery appears to be the term used, while in the UK we prefer to talk about operations.

Either is correct; however, most physicians will tell you that you need surgery, then explain his findings, pre-operative instructions, the procedure, and follow up care.
