I live in Cairns - and anytime of the year is a great time to visit.. although more people come in 'winter' as it's cooler.
We've had our coldest winter .. in ages but still gets up to 25 during the day, sunny and not humid.

You'll love the great barrier reef.
Apart from 'Great Adventures' and 'Quick Silver' that takes you out on the reef - what about trying something really different such as - http://www.scubadoocairns.com or http://www.seawalker.com.au

It can be cold around Adelaide and Kangaroo Island in June as that is the middle of winter. Minimum temperatures may be 5C so bring a wet suit. Near Cairns at the same time minimum overnight temperatures may go as low as 16C but are more likely to be around 20C.
