There is an innocence and a trust in little children that most adults lack. Thus as small children we should eagerly, innocently, and trustingly submit ourselves to the righteousness of God and obey his commandments.
Too many people have agendas, their own and their churches. They will not listen to the scriptural proof no matter how logical that makes it necessary for them to admit to having to change their opinion, or to have to change their conduct.
They forget Paul's admonition to the Galatians, "Is it, in fact, men I am now trying to persuade or God?
Or am I seeking to please men? If I were yet pleasing men, I would not be Christ's slave. "

To understand this verse one should understand the intrinsic meaning of the word CHILD, when a child enters this world it has NO MIND (Mind is our own creation which we do not bring to this world), so the child is very receptive of GOD (kingdom of heaven) which is already existent in the being. As a child grows it goes on collecting knowledge & opinions which makes a MIND (NEW PERSON/ EGO DIFFERENT FROM THE CHILD). This MIND covers/blocks one’s contemplation to receive GOD.
So this verse means to discover the God within (Kingdom of heaven) one should drop one’s Ego (Mind – the whole identity). Note the scriptures of all the religions have explained the same path to reach God

The key word in the verse is "as." You could interpret the verse in two ways. One a literal way that means you must be a young child (as in age) in order to get to heaven. The other way is to use "like" instead of "as." So you must come as a little child would.
I am more toward thinking "like" a little child. This agrees with the other teachings of Christ and other translations of the Bible use "like." Don't forget English is not the Bible's original language, always check around with other translations or do a translation yourself if you are not sure.

It means that you must think in terms of a small child, as in a sense of innocense.
Not be as a small child
Now then - Small children think in terms of "Nothings Wrong" everything is just fun and playful. If your life were like that how would that be for you?
As adults we are "Meaning Making Machines" If it doesn't mean something then our lives don't seem worthwhile. For a child that just isn't so and they are just as alive as adults.
Everything is just whatever it is, it doesn't have to mean anything, unless you want it to mean something and then it is your choice to do that. When we take responsibility for that choice and whatever consequences that are attached to it then the world we live in takes on a new perspective.

Children are humble, teachable. They don't believe they know better than anyone else With respect to the posters who said children show blind obedience or don't question, as a negative..... That is clearly untrue. What is one of a child's most annoying habits. ... Asking WHY? WHEN? WHERE? WHYY? WHO? WHY. They question and when they question they learn from the answers. It's a trait we can all imitate.

If we want to enjoy the powers of the kingdom on earth now just simply believe in God's word like a child and try not to complicate or intellectualise it.

Unless one has that sense of awe inspired by their love of, and devotion to God, as a "little child", chances are their hearts are "too grown -up" with love for the ways of the world and all the cares of this life. Such people think they've "outgrown" any need for God in their "intellectual" opinion(s).

Use children as your life model. Kids love to play and laugh, the are trusting and nonjudgemental, the thrive on love, they forgive easily, they put human relationships above all else. They delight in everyday things, they are sweet and loving (most of the time).
It also means, don't overcomplicate things with too many rules and regulations, particulary your relationship with God.

"As a little child" does not mean when you're a child, but "like a little child." It's saying with a childlike mindset.
I think this goes back to the whole "you can't logically explain faith" thing. Faith itself is a childlike concept because it calls for the rejection of the logical and embrasure of the irrational.
