I went to my eye doctor for the routine yearly eye exam. I got a prescription for contacts and glasses. Now I've lost my glasses and I want contacts, but when I went to go ask for the prescription, they said that they cannot give it to me unless I buy it from them, but they will give me the prescription for the glasses. Is that right? Am I not allowed to have my own prescription?

Yes, I received a contact lens exam and a regular glasses exam. I had the trial pair for the contact and they fit fine, but I opted for the glasses instead.

Did you have a contact lens fitting with the doctor? The doctor cannot provide a prescription for contacts until he has done a fitting and followup with the lenses to make sure they are right for your eyes and not doing harm. In order to this you must be wearing contacts so you will have to buy the first ones from him.

You can take your glasses prescription to a different place where they will use it as a starting point for fitting contacts, but you will still have to pay them for fitting and follow up.

You can have your own prescription in some states, but if you have never worn contacts before, that Doctor is not going to just give you the RX. Are you sure that you had a contact lense evaluation? Usually if they did that you would have been given trial lenses with a follow up date, and once they determined that that is what your contacts would be they would order your contacts for you. Some doctors will not take the responsability of someone else filling your prescription wrong. It is not like putting socks on your feet. These things go in your eye. Do not argue with them, just do what they tell you it is in your best interrest!

Did you go back for the follow up? If you didn't, technically they are not done fitting you with the contacts and the doctor hasn't gotten your exact prescription yet. At my office where I work the follow up is included in the exam. Then if they don't want to get the contacts with us, we give them their Rx to go. If I were you I would call them and see if you need to go back for a follow up.
Also, the contact lens prescription expires every year, so that is something you may want to consider.
They can also withhold your prescription if you have a balance.
Otherwise it is your right to have your prescription.

You are allowed your own prescription, and I ma not sure why they would not give it to you. I'm not a Dr. but every time I've gone I've gotten my own prescription.

That's not right. They are supposed to give you your rx. Then it is your choice to fill it with them or go elsewhere.
