No the F-22 Raptor cannot "hover" like in the movie. Like most modern attach aircraft it's thrust to weight ratio makes it capable of vertical flight and a few moments of vertical hovering, with nose up and tail down, are certainly possible it cannot hover as shown in the movie. The Raptor uses thrust vectoring to assist in maneuvering. it's jet outlets have a range of 40 degrees. They even called the plane in the movie a F-35 and like so many other things in the movie it is Hollywood fantasy, Go to:

That wasn't a F-22 in the movie, its a F-35. 7 years later we have seen the F-35 in action and it is certainly capable of performing such feats, it will mostly depend on the pilot.

The plane in the die hard movie is the F-35 not the F-22. The F-22 cannot hover. The F-35 can and is also known as the joint strike fighter as it will be used by several branches of the military as well as the RAF and Royal navy. This plane is meant to replace the Harrier.

No, the F-22 can NOT hover. The F-22 Raptor is the replacement for the F-15 and is a straight interceptor / fighter. IT DOES have vectored-thrust though which allows some TIGHT turns and interesting manuvers, but NO HOVERING. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-22_Raptor
The aircraft in the MOVIE was the F-35B Lightning, known in developement as the "Joint Strike Fighter"... The B version is for the US Marines and perhaps the Royal Navy and is to replace the XX yr old AV-8C Harrier.
ONLY the B version of the Lighting will be capable of VTOL. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35_Lightning_II#F-35B

no, the F22 cannot hover, however the F22 was not in the new die hard move either. it was the marine corps version the F35 joint strike fighter, which can hover.

Only the version that will be produced for the Marine Corps will hover. The ones made for the other services will not. However, there are rumors that congress does not want to spring for the money to make this alternate version for the Marine Corps and that it may not be produced.
